Windows 10: Why can't I connect an external monitor?

When I go to connect my external monitor to my laptop, it doesn't connect. The monitor shows up in the device manager but is not detected when I go to set it up within the settings. After looking at the event viewer, it shows that there is a warning from Kernel-pnp Event ID 442. I have updated myu drivers and tried rolling back drivers. I have also reset my BIOS security settings to factory default and done a sfc/scannow where faulty drivers were fixed. Any ideas for what I need to do to get the monitor to work?

External Monitor with Quicken

• Have you checked if the display resolution settings of the Surface device and the external monitor is the same?

Connecting to external monitor

I just upgraded to Windows 10, but am unable to connect my Lenovo X1 Carbon to an external monitor (tried two separate monitors). Before it would automatically detect the monitor, now it only has 1 listed when I go into Settings / Display. I found the "Windows
button + P" option online, but when I highlight Duplicate or Extend I am unable to "select" or "enter" them.

How can I make Windows detect my external monitor? (I am using the same cord that has always worked to connect my monitor before.) Thanks!
