Windows 10: Why can't User perform inplace upgrade?

I'm an Insider. When a new release is ready, Microsoft manage to replace my existing windows with the new version but retaining all my programs and files.

If I use the latest official ISO however I am not offered this option. The best MS offer is to "keep my files and data" - which is a lie. They trash all my programs, their settings and data. Programs like Photoshop, Lightroom, video editors and so on. All have to be carefully reinstalled and reconfigured and plugins and so on reinstalled, re-registered etc... This is a pain in the bum.

Why can't users do their own inplace upgrade from an ISO if it is clearly possible as MS do it!

I ask because in actual fact, Microsoft's auto upgrade system for my Insider builds always fails with two GSOD with memory exception errors. I've entered a separate post about this problem.

It is possible that you're unable to perform an in-place upgrade due to having not enough space for your partition. To better assist you, we'd like to gather more information:

• Have you made any recent changes prior to this issue?
• What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you follow the steps in this
article to troubleshoot your system reserved partition. It will provide you instructions to increase the available space of your System Reserved Partition.

The other reason I suggested this is that users can add characters to their username that are not alphanumeric (e.g. user*). This confuses things somewhat when looking at the list.
