Inside that folder there are many things such as:

Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, NVIDIA, Packages, SoftwareDistribution, ...

oh, and all this stuff is ALSO in each one of the Application Data subfolders.

So it's always a copy inside a copy inside a copy

Setting the location for application data

Does anyone here know where/how you can set the location for an applications data? I'm in the process of tidying up the "My documents" folder on my PC and for some strange reason, along with all my documents, there are a number of folders belonging to applications installed on the pc. These include folders for Adobe, Rock Star games, Tomb Raider, etc, etc. The folders are auto generated by their application: if I delete the Tomb Raider folder, it reappears in the same location as soon as I run the game.

Presumably there is a setting somewhere that dictates the location of these files? I would have thought that they would more properly belong somewhere like C:\User\appdata\.... or similar, and can only imagine that, at some point in the past, I changed something that has resulted in them currently residing in my documents library.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Cliff

  3. Application Data 13 levels deep

Recently my C:\ drive lost 3GB. Still haven't figure out why, but whilst searching I came across this strange issue.

If I go to c:\users and look in the All Users hidden folder I will see a folder called Application Data which is a junction to C:\ProgramData. If I cd to that hidden Application Data folder I will see another hidden Application Data junction that again points to C:\ProgramData. And so on until I get to 13 levels of Application Data folders.

If I look at if from the C:\ drive I see a hidden folder called Documents and Settings. In that folder is a hidden folder called All Users which is a symlink to C:\ProgramData. In All Users is a hidden folder called Application Data which points to C:\ProgramData, and so on down 13 levels of Application Data folders.

    Eg. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data>

At the 13th level is a folder called Battle.Net. That should be there. If I look at the contents of c:\programdata\battle.net I see files as I would expect.

If I dir from the command line from the above path (13 levels of application data), it says that the Battle.net folder is empty. If I attempt to cd into batlle.net is says the file or folder does not exist.

Perhaps I've hit the maximum length of the path at that point.

So I went back one level and did rd "application data". Then dir /ah. It now says The system cannot find the path specified.

Going back to C:\Users\All Users, the entire path is now gone. Have I just broken Windows?

So, without reinstalling windows how do I resolve this?

    Why do I have a folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Application...

    My Documents Files - Deleted?

I have a PC where I have moved My Docs away from my C: to my E: so i can perhaps suggest a few things to check.

    1. The documents and settings folder will still be present on your C: (although unused)
    2. My Documents on my E: is shown as E:\Data (do you have a similar directory)
    3. Is your missing data in this \Data folder if it exists?
    4. If you click the My Documents shortcut does it take you to the default C:\doc and settings\blah blah, or does it take you to the \Data folder?

Ive had a similar issue with an application resetting the My Docs path back to its orig location and in essence orphaning the My Docs on my E:
