Why do I suddenly need to pay for HEVC extension to play videos???

It seems I suddenly need HEVC extensions to play video recorded on my iphone and transferred to my windows 11 laptop. Does any else get this problem? If I forward the video to friends will everyone else need to buy these extensions?

  2. Hevc extensions installed and 360 videos do not play as 360 videos

    Hello, Wes Caines

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

The HEVC Video Extension is primarily used to support the playback of HEVC-encoded video files in certain pre-installed applications on Windows. However, many third-party media players, such as VLC, already have built-in support for HEVC decoding and 360° videos. Therefore, there is no need to install any additional extensions when using these apps. If you haven't already, I recommend trying out third-party players like VLC, which natively support HEVC and 360° videos.

If you have already tried these players and are still experiencing issues, it is unlikely that the problem is related to the HEVC extension. As mentioned earlier, many third-party players do not require the HEVC extension. If the videos still cannot be played in third-party players, it is less likely to be an issue with the extension itself. To determine if the problem is specific to certain videos, you can try playing them on a different device to check if the video files are corrupted.

If none of the videos can be played, I suggest updating your graphics card driver and trying again. Ensure that you download the graphics card driver from the official website of the hardware manufacturer to ensure compatibility.

If you have tried the aforementioned methods and are still unable to resolve the issue, I recommend reaching out to the support team of your hardware manufacturer or seeking technical assistance. They may be able to provide more specific guidance and solutions tailored to your situation.

  3. HEVC Video Extensions

Hi DennisDennison1 and thanks for reaching out. My name is Joseph. I'm an independent advisor. I'll be happy to help you out today.

It is just an extension/codec that installed on your Windows 10 to be able to play HEVC or H.264 video format using the default video player installed on your Windows 10 PC.

Play High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) videos in any video app on your Windows 10 device. These extensions are designed to take advantage of hardware capabilities on some newer devices— including those with an Intel 7th Generation Core processor and newer GPU to support 4K and Ultra HD content. For devices that don’t have hardware support for HEVC videos, software support is provided, but the playback experience might vary based on the video resolution and PC performance. These extensions also let you encode HEVC content on devices that don’t have a hardware-based video encoder.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes.

    Thank you!

    HEVC Video extension not installing

    Hi,

I am trying to view HEIC image files on my Windows 10 PC

I installed HEIF extension from Microsoft Store, it installed properly, but still Photos app is showing only blurry images.

Upon googling i saw advice to install HEVC Video extension too.

I bought HEVC Video extension from the Microsoft Store and when click on "Install" nothing happens and HEVC is not listed in the Apps & Features list. (HEIF extension is present in this list)

When i select the three dots near the "Install" button i was given the list of machines i want the extension to be installed on. When i select the machine i am trying to install on, all i get is the message saying that "We will attempt to install the extension on the machine you requested" but no action

Is there a way for me to get the binary myself and install it manually instead of relying on some auto install program?

I have already wasted 2 days trying to view HEIC files on Windows 10.
