  1. Why do my cpu speeds drop off when the threads are no longer full?

I have a PC with an Intel I9 149000k processor. It has 8-performance cores and 14-effiency cores for a total of 32-threads. I use Windows 11.I'm a geophysicist and I work with a multi-thread application to process very large datasets. When I launch the application, I set the program to use 30 of the 32 threads. During the first 14 hours, the p-cores run at 5+Ghz and the e-cores run at 4+Ghz. At just after 14 hours, the p-cores appear to complete their task and drop to zero while the remaining e-core continue processing at 100% and 4.4Ghz. At this point the job in roughly 85% complete. Then, af

  2. CPU speed is dropping

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

It seems like you've already taken some steps to address the issue, which is great! However, if the CPU speed is still dropping, it could be due to a number of factors. Here are some additional steps to consider:

    1. Overheating: Even though you've cleaned the fans and changed the thermal paste, overheating could still be an issue. Make sure your laptop is on a hard, flat surface that doesn't block the air vents. You might also consider using a laptop cooling pad.
    2. Thermal Paste Issue: If you suspect that carrying the laptop vertically caused the thermal paste to run off, you might need to reapply the paste. However, thermal paste is quite viscous and shouldn't easily run off once applied and given time to settle. Make sure to apply the right amount (usually a pea-sized amount is enough) and that it's spread evenly.
    3. Power Settings: Check your power settings in Windows. Go to Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change plan settings -> Change advanced power settings . Under Processor power management , make sure Minimum processor state and System cooling policy are set to Active .
    4. BIOS update: Sometimes, a BIOS update can fix issues with CPU performance. Visit the Lenovo website, look up your laptop model, and see if there are any BIOS updates available.

If you are going to modify BIOS Settings, please back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.
    5. CPU Stress Test: You can perform a CPU stress test using third-party tools. This can help identify if there's a hardware problem with the CPU.
    6. Contact Lenovo Support: If none of these steps help, you might want to contact Lenovo support. They can guide you through troubleshooting steps or arrange for a repair if necessary.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further updates, thanks.

Why do my cpu speeds drop off when the threads are no longer full?

CPU and GPU clock speeds drop under load

I'm having a weird problem with my laptop where, every few seconds during playing high-load games, the CPU and GPU both drop speed sharply for a second, causing a big slowdown in framerate. (For instance, the CPU speed will suddenly drop from about 3.4 GHz
to less than 0.8 GHz). At the same time, the screen's brightness will dip as well, which suggests to me that it's related to my power settings. It also seems to happen more frequently when I'm charging a low battery than when the battery is full - I've even
had it happen while streaming video when I'm charging from a low battery.

I've tried switching my power plan settings so that everything is the same for "On battery" and "Plugged in", which solves the brightness changing but does not solve the speed drop. I've also tried monitoring the temperatures of the GPU and CPU but they never
seem too high. I've tried clean installs, updating drivers, etc. I don't have anything overclocked. I've had the laptop for a about a year and the problem is quite new, and seems to be getting worse.

    System:

    Gigabyte P55 WR7 notebook

    Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.8GHz

    16 GB RAM

    NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
