Windows 10: Why do Parental Control, Content Restrictions only work for the Edge Browser?

Some of the websites I like to visit slurp too much of my time. But my work also requires using the computer. Because of this, I find it hard to separate work and entertainment based on willpower alone. And so I have turned on designing my windows experience to help me separate work and play using the Parental Controls PC options available in windows 10.


I have currently set it up like this. I have a 'family' containing an administrator account and two kids. One isme-during-work-time and another is me-during-leisure-time. These accounts are also users on my device.

Using the parental controls, me-during-leisure-time can only access the computer during certain hours of the day, whileme-during-work-time cannot access certain websites I like to visit as pasttime. Once it is fully set up, the goal is to strip the administrator account and only have it there to manage admin and family issues. I can then switch between the two users during the day based on what I want to use my device for at that time.


But the sites don't block and I've found out why. Parental control offers aContent Restrictions Menu where you can block apps and websites separately. But as it truns out, Parental Control can block apps, it can block apps and websites, but it cannot just block websites without also blocking any browser that is not Edge. Why, because Parental Control cannot block sites on browsers not named Edge. So if I want sites blocked, I need to use Edge as my browser.


Why is this? I tend to use multiple browers for different tasks, and I like some browsers more than others for various reasons. Why can I not just choose what browser I use?

Parental Controls aren't working

The issue could be because of corrupted files. I suggest you to delete the corrupted files yourself and see if it helps

to resolve the issue, please follow these steps:

1) Make sure your children are signed out of any monitored accounts.

2) Sign in with an administrator account and find the folder that contains the corrupted files.

There are two ways to do this. The easiest way is to enter the complete file path:

• 
  On the Start screen, type C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Parental Controls and press Enter.
  

• 
  If you’d rather open each folder individually, follow these steps:
  

a. Go to This PC

b. Open C:, open the
ProgramData folder, open the Microsoft folder, open the
Windows folder, and open the Parental Controls folder.

3) Delete all contents of the Parental Controls folder.

This will delete any corrupt files. Your settings will be downloaded again from familysafety.microsoft.com the next time you sign in.
