Hello,I am currently working on a GPO to block the installation of USB devices, except for those explicitly allowed via their Device Instance ID.I’ve noticed a strange behavior:Some devices have a standard ID like this:USB\VID_PID\SERIALNUMBEROthers have a more complex ID format, such as:USB\VID_PID\X&SERIALNUMBER&X&XXXXwhich occasionally changes after multiple insertions.Note: the serial number itself does not change — it's the other parts after it that vary. This makes targeted authorization more difficult, as it may require allowing multiple variants of the ID.My questions are:Wh

Partition Type (id) different in Windows 10 Format vs Windows 7 Format

Partition type (e.g. partition id) is differently set by "Format" command (FAT) between win 7 and win 10.
Why is there such an inconsistency, is this a bug?

    • Format a removable drive (e.g., USB) on Win 7 (use FAT) and then check partition type using Diskpart commands. You will see that the partition type (e.g. partition id) is 0x06.
    2. Next Format the card in the removable drive in Win 10. You will see that the partition type (e.g. partition id) is
    0x0E.

This causes a problem as when we moved an application from Win 7 to Win 10. The SW does the formatting (via OS API: FMIFS.DLL (File Manager to Installable File System)) however the partition type on Windows 10 ends up different than on Windows 7. We
need (required) the partition type to be 0x06 as in windows 7.

I know that diskpart allows you to change partition type (e.g. partition id) via set id. However, I did not find any API to do that (i.e. change partition table entry) after formatting.
Is there any way to change only the partition id programmatically?

    Thanks

USB Flash Drive saying not formatted..?

    Hi,

I have a Memorex Poker Chip USB Flash Drive 1GB, and It shows up fine on one PC as "Poker Chip" in explore, and I can transfer files... but on my other PC (the one I'm on now..specs in profile) it's listed only as H: Removable Disk, and when I click on it, it says: "The Device is not formatted, would you like to format it now? (Y/N). Why would it be recognized on one PC, but the not the other? How come the other PC didn't need it formatted? When I click yes to format it, it says: "Windows was unable to complete the format"

I went to the BIOS and USB 2.0 is enabled. And Device Manager does list it as a Memorex Poker Chip..

Installing windows off of a USB stick

    Step By Step from vista:
    From admin cmd prompt

    1. diskpart
    1a. list disk
    2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
    3. clean
    4. create partition primary
    5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
    6. active
    7. format fs=fat32
    8. assign
    9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk
