  1. Why do Windows 10 updates cause 100% disk usage?

I manage multiple computers in an office setting as well as multiple computers at home. They area all different models and a few different manufacturers (though the majority of them are Dell computers), but I encounter the same problem repeatedly on every Windows 10 machine I have used.

Why do Windows 10 updates cause 100% disk usage? For some reason, the download slows the computers to a crawl. Both of the laptops I have at home are gaming machines, but the specs of the machines do not seem to matter; once it starts downloading, you aren't getting anything done until it's finished.

The "fix" seems to just be sitting around and waiting. It's just a very frustrating problem. Without fail, I will not use a laptop for a few days, need to get some work done, turn it back on, and then be stuck and unable to do anything for hours. I'm sitting here staring at one right now; we took it out to a coffee shop to get some work done and had to leave in frustration because the computer cannot do anything.

Why does this happen? I never had these problems with Windows XP, Windows 7, or WIndows 8. Windows Updates used to just work seamlessly in the background - with the occasional annoying prompt to restart or annoyance when you woke up the next morning and realized that the computer restarted without saving your work.

    :)

  2. 100% disk usage

The most common cause of 100% disk usage appears to be Superfetch and Prefetch, but there are also other causes. You can try disabling both these features and see if it helps.

This article provides steps to disable prefecth and superfetch:

  3. How to solve 100 % disk usage in windows 10 after fall update?

    Hi Manikanteswara,

Usually, a virus could be the main cause of 100% disk usage. The first step in rectifying the problem is to check your disk usages. You need to open the Task Manager and take a look at your disk usages to identify the programs or applications that are causing
your hard disk 100% usage. Here's how:

    • Type task manager in the Windows search bar and select the best match.
    • In the Processes tab, look at the disk process to see what is causing your hard disk 100% usage.

Kindly send a screenshot, so I can take a closer look.

Hoping to hear from you soon.
