To be able to monitor them more closely? Why don't you give folks the option to remove the things they don't like and see how many things like this drive customers away? Oh, wait...then you wouldn't have the control.

Building the New Bing

A year and a half ago, I wrote an article suggesting that search was far from a solved problem, and that in fact it was poised for a revolution. I suggested that by applying deep learning models and making search more modern and intuitive, we could significantly improve the experience for our users. I’m thrilled to see that we are making a large step forward towards this vision with the recent announcement of the new Bing. We’ve received many questions in the last couple of weeks of the current preview, so I’d like to share a little bit more about the new Bing and how it came to be. Behind the scenes: How the new Bing came to be Last Summer, OpenAI shared their next generation GPT model with us, and it was game-changing. The new model was much more powerful than GPT-3.5, which powers ChatGPT, and a lot more capable to synthesize, summarize, chat and create. Seeing this new model inspired us to explore how to integrate the GPT capabilities into the Bing search product, so that we could provide more accurate and complete search results for any query including long, complex, natural queries.

New LaTeX Support in Bing Chat

Last week, we announced updates to SwiftKey and other mobile apps that bring Bing chat to your fingertips in ways that improve your productivity. We’re also excited about yesterday’s announcement that Copilot is coming to Microsoft Viva. Here’s a summary of what else has changed in Bing chat since our April 7 update:

LaTeX Support: We shipped support for LaTeX markup—allowing Bing chat to correctly display complex mathematical expressions. This makes Bing chat an even more useful tool for learning math concepts or writing technical research papers.

Reducing End-of-conversation Triggers: We’ve heard your feedback that messages would sometimes trigger Bing to unnecessarily end conversations (e.g. “I’m sorry but I prefer not to continue this conversation.” or “It might be time to move on to a new topic.”). This should now occur less frequently than before, and we’re continuing to investigate cases where this happens.

News Grounding: We’ve taken steps to help Bing give better answers if you’re asking questions about news (e.g. “What are today’s top breaking news stories?”). Expect us to make further grounding improvements based on your feedback.

Additionally, we fixed some known bugs—including:

Reducing instances where Bing chat triggered unnecessary duplicative searches.

Minimizing errors that led to Bing chat returning no response to queries.

The things you love about Windows – copy/paste, Snap Assist, Snipping Tool, personalization – they are all right there for you, along with every other feature on the platform, and they only get better with Windows Copilot. For example, you can not only copy and paste, but also ask Windows Copilot to rewrite, summarize or explain your content.

Just like you would with Bing Chat, you can ask Windows Copilot a range of questions from simple to complex. If I want to call my family in Cyprus, I can quickly check the local time to make sure I’m not waking them up in the middle of the night. If I want to plan a trip to visit them in Cyprus, I can ask Windows Copilot to find my family flights and accommodations for mid-winter break.

With Bing and ChatGPT plugins in Windows Copilot, people will not only have access to augmented AI capabilities and experiences, but you as developers will also have new ways to reach and innovate for our shared customers.
