Windows 10: why does an exe stop working on some machines?

This is an exe developed by me, in use by 5000+ users in 41 countries. Until recently, running under win 10 and win 11. No meaningful changes for the past year. Development machine is win 10 where exe still runs properly. Now fails to launch on two systems 1 WIN 10 Vision, 1 WIN 11 Surace. No messages of any kind. Just 1 beep. VB6 IDE still compiles and resulting exe runs without problems on home machine.Implanted debug shows problem occurs before 1st executable vb statement. I have examined permissions, malware, registry permissions, and DISM. found nothing. I have Procmon, but no experien

It is possible that you .exe is not working due to corrupted system files or account. To assist you better, kindly answer the following questions:

• Does this happen with a specific application or with all of your application?
• Have you tried creating a new admin account to check if the issue also with new account or only with the current account?

.exe has stopped working

You might be facing this issue due to the incompatibility of the program with Windows 10 also. So I suggest you to install the program in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

Now, to install in Compatibility Mode, follow these steps:

a. Locate the executable file (.exe file) for the driver installation program.

b. Right-click the file, and then click Properties.

c. In the Package Name Properties dialog box, click the Compatibility tab.

d. Click to select the Run this program in compatibility mode for check box, click Windows 8.1\ Windows 7 with which it is compatible with in the Run this program in compatibility mode for list, and
then click OK.

e. Double-click the executable file to start the installation program.

Can't stop machine waking itself from hibernation


My desktop machine keeps waking itself up from hibernation, usually during the night, despite my having taken all reasonable steps to stop it. I have:

• disabled waking on network, mouse and RTC in BIOS setup
• disabled wake on mouse and network in device manager (and checked with powercfg -devicequery wake_armed)
• disabled "allow wake timers" for all power plans

It doesn't however wake itself up from S5 (shutdown). I also tried leaving it in S3 sleep for over 24 hours and it didn't wake up, although that's not long enough to be certain that it never would.

Unfortunately my records in Event Viewer only go back a bit over a week to my upgrade to Windows 10, but I did notice a pattern in the first few days of waking at around 00:17 or 00:18 in the morning. Event Viewer suggested that this was due to mcupdate_scheduler, which was scheduled to run at 00:19, so I changed the trigger (following some instructions from Microsoft), but the next night the machine woke earlier, at 23:45. Unfortunately event viewer had no idea what caused that particular event. And today I have just run powercfg -waketimer and apparently there is a task \blah\blah\updateorchestrator\reboot which requires waking the machine just after 02:00 tomorrow morning. Clearly trying to change each individual trigger is a hopeless game of whack-a-mole which will sooner or later result in my wrecking something. How on earth can I stop my machine waking up?
