PC using ram for no reason

Chrome. It preloads pages 3 pages deep from any page open just in case you might click on them later, so it can fake a faster load. The trade of is significantly worse performance, RAM utilization, and battery life (if you like fast loads though, it might
be worth it). If you have 64-bit system, it will use even more as aggressively as it possibly can.

This is why it's fruitless to even try to fix it if chrome has a process running, and also why I disable it from running in the background.

I'm not saying the answer is "don't use Chrome", but it's impossible to troubleshoot if chrome is actively processing, because it's busy loading hundreds of pages that you may or may not ever actually visit.

PS. Don't get me wrong, I have it installed. I'm a web developer. I need it, and the Profiles system it has is invaluable and I couldn't do my job without it.

There is problem: Chrome, its an absolute memory and battery hog.

I would stop using it immediately.

Architecture. Google decided to run every tab and every extension as a task. If the task fails it is just supposed to take out the specific task and the rest keep running.

Older traditional browsers put everything in one process. This tended to keep memory usage lower because threads have a smaller memory overhead than processes. But reliability was sometimes a problem because if there was a problem in one tab it was likely to take down the entire browser.

From the beginning Chrome went a different route. Usually each tab had it's own process but tabs on the same website would often share a process. This enhanced reliability because problems with a tab were usually confined to a single process and the other tabs would be unaffected. But memory usage tended to be higher.

Most popular browsers are going the multiprocess route. Internet Explorer did this quite a while ago and Firefox is on the path. Older versions still use a single process. With the amounts of memory that are now typical the higher resource usage is usually not a problem.
