Windows 10: why does my computer turn to sleep when screensaver and other settings are off

my computer keeps going to sleep even though nothing tells it to. i think i know the cause, and it is the screensaver, when i activate it with a timer for 99 minutes it no longer turns off after a short time which is ok, but i do not want a time limit, so when i turn it off by setting it to nothing, it does the thing again by going to sleep with a blank, black screen and as soon as there is activity it puts you in the lock screen. this is annoying so if any one can support me ASAP i would love to hear from you.

Computer Sleep Option Missing in Settings

The Settings Power and Sleep menu in Settings should list Screen and Sleep, where Sleep is used to tell when the PC goes to sleep. Sleep is missing, so my computer never sleeps. Fast startup and Hibernate are not enabled. I used Tutorial Add or Remove Sleep in Power menu in Windows 10 to change the registry while in administrative mode, but sleep still is not seen. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FlyoutMenuSettings now lists :1: It was 0 before the change.

I cannot get a large image, so will type Default REG_SZ (value not set) ShowHibernate REG_DWORD 0X00000000 (0) ShowLockOption REG_DWORD 0X00000000 (1) ShowLockOption REG_DWORD 0X00000000 (1) I used Option 3 to add sleep using the Group Policy Editor. The steps seemed to work fine, but sleep is still missing. I’m using a “new” refurbished Dell T3500 workstation with mbr running the current version of win10. I have a number of these computers, and the other all have the normal sleep mode . Any suggestions? Jim

 

Screensaver off in sleep

The screensaver and sleep are two different things. The screensaver can run any time that the system is active, but it cannot run while the computer is sleeping. One strategy would be to set the screensaver to kick off after a certain period of inactivity, then allow the computer to go to sleep after a LONGER delay than the screensaver. Example: Set the screensaver to run after 15 minutes of inactivity, then go to sleep after 30 minutes. The result is that the screen save will run after 15 minutes up to the 30 minute mark at which time the computer will sleep and the screensaver will cease.

 

Is it sleep, hibernate or something else?

Do you mean that the display goes blank after 30 mins? That does not necessarily indicate sleep - it can just mean screensaver. "the screen saver is set to show BOINC after 30 minutes" I think you mean that your screensaver is set to kick in after 30 mins & Boinc is set as the screensaver. That implies that Boinc is installed as an active type of screensaver. I've no problem accepting that even though I've never seen it before. I assume that also means that if you change your screensaver to off that Boinc never starts. "I think your help has solved my problem" I don't think I have. You have shown how Boinc is implemented but "I have to press the on button on the front of the computer a few times" still indicates that you have a problem. How familiar are you with Event viewer? Here is an Event viewer "Custom view" definition. Unzip it, Run Event viewer - eventvwr.msc In the upper-right of the window, click on Import Custom view, Select the unzipped "Custom view" definition, Open, OK. In Event viewer's left-hand pane, select Custom views, Power - S0-Sleep-Hibernate transitions and you will see a timed list of sleep & resume from sleep events. If your computer sleeps, you'll see an entry The system is entering sleep when it starts sleepand an entry The system has returned from a low power state when it ends it. If you see it sleep without a resume then the computer has crashed during sleep. If you don't see either then no sleep has occurred. Given what you have posted, I do not think your computer is sleeping at all. You use it then Boinc uses it. Nothing else. There is nothing to tell it to sleep [unless Boinc has that capability]. I think your first investigation step should be to turn the screensaver off so Boinc never starts and then see if the computer behaves itself. Your second step could be to set the computer to sleep after 25 mins to check it sleeps and resumes correctly. That will leave whatever Boinc does as the source of the problem. I do not know what those Boinc settings in your diagram mean so I cannot suggest what to do with it. Denis
