Why does my disk keep unmounting itself?

I'm having a random issue with a SanDisk hard drive I bought. I wanted to just install Linux on a small bit of it and use the rest for Windows backups. After downloading Ubuntu 22.04, and partitioning it when asked, the installer crashed at the "Setting up user" section. So I tried another distro, just to be met with a message telling me that it couldn't partition my drive. Bear in mind I have another of the same model and it works flawlessly. Trying to wipe the partitions in Disk Manager on Windows 11 results in a message claiming:Trying to clear the disk in `diskpart` doesn't work either,

    :)

  2. Windows 10 shutdown doesn't unmount despite......

    Hi,

Thank you for the update and I apologize for the late response.

I appreciate if you could answer few questions to narrow down to the issue.

    • How exactly you are trying to unmount the drive. Is it through Command prompt or from Disk management?

    • What exactly happens when you try to unmount?

    • Did you receive any error message while trying to unmount?
I suggest you to try the steps given below and check if it helps.

Please close all the Windows before trying the steps.

    • Open Disk management.

    • Right-click the mounted drive that you want to remove, and then click
      Change Drive Letter and Paths.

    • Click Remove, and then click Yes.
Hope the information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance. We will be happy to help.

    Thank you.

How to fix error unmountable boot volume

    Hi James,

It is possible that you received the error UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME due to a damaged file system which failed to mount. This error also means that sub-system on machine failed to mount the boot volume. To efficiently assist you, we'd like
    to gather more information:

    • Have you made any recent changes prior to this issue?
    • What is the exact error message you received?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

Meanwhile, we suggest that you you follow the steps shared by Michelle Her and
Billion Debbarma on this threads below to troubleshoot your concern:

Keep us posted if you need additional help.

Why does my disk keep unmounting itself?

MSI laptop - reboot & now unmountable disk - acpi issue?

The unmountal boot volume can be fixed by replacing hardware but this also replaces the software and the software may be the problem.

The UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME bug check has a value of 0x000000ED.
This indicates that the I/O subsystem attempted to mount the boot volume and it failed.

If you want to troubleshoot the software that can be done.
(drive file system, boot files, operating system, etc.)

Find a flash drive that you can format ( > or = 8 GB)
Create a bootable windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10

If you prefer the drive replacement that will be faster.

If you prefer to troubleshoot indicate when you have the iso ready and steps can be posted into the thread.
For the steps please use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures and post images of the commands and results into the thread.

The steps that can be provided will be more detailed.

If attempts to boot to the Windows 10 iso fail you can also try Kyhi boot rescue.

If Kyhi boot rescue works then you can test the drive using
HD Tune (Health or SMART, Benchmark, and Full error scan) > post images of the result into the thread
    HD Tune website
    Crystal Disk
    CrystalDiskInfo Crystal Dew World
    Macrorit:

    etc.

    Followed by chkdsk /r
