Windows 10: Why does my DVD drive spin up and down at various times while computer is on?

Yes I have a DVD in the DVD drive but am not watching it when the DVD drive spins up and down which is very very odd. Computer is a desktop PC.

Step 1: Try updating the DVD\CD-ROM drives from device manager.

• Press Windows key + X and click on
  Device Manager.
• Expand DVD\CD-ROM drives .
• 
  Right click on the driver and select
  Update Driver Software.

  Restart the computer.
  

Step 2: I suggest you to check and install if there is any latest firmware update for DVD drive from the computer manufacturer.

DVD drive keeps spinning in Windows 10

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you faced. I will certainly help you with this. Kindly refer to the below given methods and check if it works.

Method 1:

I would suggest you to follow these steps and try to run the Hardware troubleshooter:

• Press Windows key + X on the keyboard.
• Click on Control panel.
• Type “Troubleshooting” without quotes in the Control panel
  search box.
• Click on Troubleshooting and click on
  View all.
• Click on Hardware and Devices troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions

Method 2:

This issue may arise due to outdated DVD/CD-ROM Driver, I suggest you to follow the below given steps and check if you are able to rund DVD

• Press (Windows key + X) and click on “Device Manager”.
• Expand “DVD/CD-ROM Drives”.

• Right click on the drivers and select “Update Driver Software”. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

If there no updated drivers available on the computer manufacturer’s website, then try installing it in compatibility mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows. Follow these steps
to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

• Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.

• Right-click on the driver setup file and click on
  ‘Properties’.
• Click on the ‘Compatibility’ tab and check the box
  ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8/8.1 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

My dvd drive will not load from dvd drive although I can hear it spinning

• Are you able to see the DVD in the DVD drive and able to play it?
• Does this issue occur with a particular DVD or with other DVD's as well?

Lets try the below steps and check if it helps:

Update or reinstall the driver:

To update the driver, search for the driver on the device manufacturer's website, and then follow the installation instructions on the website.

To reinstall the driver, follow these steps:

• Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.
• Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click
  Allow
• In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then click
  Uninstall.
• When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click
  OK.
• Restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, the drivers will be automatically installed.
