  1. Why does my SSD C: randomly gain or lose 1-2 GB every time I check it?

    Hey guys!

So I just got a new laptop with a 512 GB SSD. I'm pretty paranoid with random losing space in my SSD without my knowledge and so I routinely check it through Windows Explorer. Every time I check, I would either see having 404 GB, 403 GB, and not anymore recently but 405 GB as well. In-between checks, I did not download anything close to 1 or 2 GB worth of data. Additionally, these fluctuations usually happen after restarting or booting up my system. Can anyone explain this? Is it normal or could I do something to prevent my memory from repeatedly fluctuating?

    :)

    C Drive losing free space

    Hello,

I have a new laptop. On 17/08/19, C:\ had 85GB free space out of 117 GB total. Every week, it is losing about 5GB free space, and currently stands at 66.7 GB. I do not understand why free space should be lost. Can someone please help?

Here are salient items of information:

    1. 128 GB SSD drive + 1 TB mechanical drive
    2. Only 1 active windows user
    3. No system restore points, checked as per suggestions available on www.
    4. "Downloads" folder configured on D drive
    5. "Documents" folder configured on D drive
    6. New programs installed on D drive
    7. Anti virus scan run - no infection found
    8. Drive Statistics: 117 GB total, 66.7 GB free, 25.0 GB in 162,742 files / 35817 folders

At this rate, the drive will fill up in 3 months. *Shock

  3. Script file not found C:\WPVIQJ~2\QKVYQZ~1.TXT

It's probably the residue of some infection that your virus scanner eliminated. You can get rid of the error message like so:

    1. Mark the first code line below, then press Ctrl+C to copy it.
    2. Press the Windows key + R
    3. Press Ctrl+V to copy the code line, then press Enter
    4. Repeat Steps 1 . . 3 with the second code line

    cmd /c md C:\WPVIQJ~2 & pause

    cmd /c cd 2> C:\WPVIQJ~2\QKVYQZ~1.TXT & pause

Why does my SSD C: randomly gain or lose 1-2 GB every time I check it?

Cloning to SSD then swapping drive letters

    @SamHobbs
What you want done is very simple and can be done in short period of time. Here's my suggestion:
There's 2 modes that Windows can be installed: UEFI and the old legacy MBR. Open Disk Management, look at the disk where your C drive is, if there's a
    1. EFI System Partition, your Windows was installed using UEFI.
    2. System Reserved partition, your Windows was installed using MBR
Next, Connect your SSD to an available Sata port (no need to format or do anything). Download: Macrium Reflect Free . Install and run. Follow the steps below:
    1. From Macrium, click on image this disk under your C drive and save it to either an Internal or External Drive. This will create a single backup image of the whole disk containing your C drive.
    2. Again, from Macrium, click on Restore tab and select the image created from step 1, Select your SSD as the destination drive, click Next->Finish
    3. Exit Macrium. If your Windows was installed using MBR, Open disk management and make sure the SSD is marked "Active" else go to next step.
    4. Shutdown your PC. Disconnect the HD containing Windows C drive then connect your SSD to it.
    5. Reboot. Your PC should boot and the Windows should have C as the drive letter.

NOTE: The procedure above is to backup your Windows to an image file then copy it back to the SSD. This ensures proper cluster size aligment for the SSD. In addition, Macrium also perform Trimming for the SSD. This is more preferable than cloning.
