Windows 10: Why does Night Mode turn off while playing games with HDR?

Night mode normally works in desktop with HDR, but it turns off during Fullscreen Games

Windows 10 August 2019 update, night mode automatically turned off after playing games

After I installed the huge August windows 10 update 2 days ago, everytime after I play a game, the night light mode is automatically turned off. I'm not sure if it is intentionally designed to automatically turn night light mode off during gaming, but the
fact that it does not turn back on itself after gaming makes it stupid.

Please tell me how to keep the night light mode on. Thank you so so much!

 

HDR capability not detected by some games. Like games using the Frostbite engine.

The Xbox feature in Windows 11 will automatically enable HDR (provided you have a graphics card with minimum performance requirements). In fact, Battlefield 1 and 5 games support HDR, so if your PC has HDR enabled automatically, the game will be enabled by default.

Given your situation so far, I would suggest you check here to calibrate your monitor's HDR functionality and troubleshoote that aspect.

Then turn on the "Auto HDR" setting by following these steps:

1. Select the Start button, then enter settings.select Settings > System > Display.
   
2. If you have multiple displays, select your HDR-capable display at the top.
   
3. Turn on Use HDR, then select More options.
   
4. Turn on Auto HDR.
   
5. Go back to the game to see if HDR is enabled.
   

On the other hand, go to Start - Settings -Windows Update - Update History to see what updates have been installed recently and I can help you check the update history to see if any recent updates have reported issues with HDR.

Issues when playing games in Full Screen with "Play HDR games and apps" Enabled

I have the "Play HDR games and apps" setting enabled, otherwise everything I use on the monitor looks dull. I have been randomly getting black screens for a while now while playing full screen games. Took me weeks to figure out why this was happening.

When I turn up (or down) my pc volume by using the scroll wheel on my keyboard, a volume indicator appears on the top left of my monitor with the volume level.

This works perfectly on windowed / borderless games (even with HDR enabled) however if HDR is enabled and I am in Full Screen, when I adjust the volume I get a black screen. It then reconnects and a box in the center of the monitor appears to indicate the resolution
is 2560 x 1440 HDR.

Keyboard: Corsair K95 Platinum.

Graphics Card: Geforce RTX 2080 Super.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s).

Monitor: 2560 x 1440 165hz, Connected via Display Port.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can get the volume control to not cause black screens while playing in Full Screen games with HDR enabled?
