Windows 10: Why Does OneDrive Keep Trying To Backup My Desktop And How Do I Stop It?

I have been having issues with OneDrive recently. More specifically, it's beenbacking up my desktop files or, at least, it's been trying to. As a result, my icons have been getting green checkmarks or Xs, if it fails. It's worth mentioning that the preinstalled version of OneDrive does not open, and installing the version from the Microsoft store did not give me the option to disable it. What's more, I did not consent to having this happen. I want to ask this to be completely disabled by default

Stop Desktop Backup to OneDrive

Go to the Backup tab in the OneDrive settings > Manage backup and stop the backup of the Desktop. It's not possible to uncheck the Desktop folder. Folders that you can uncheck in the OneDrive app are removed from your
computer and remain only in the online OneDrive.

I use OneDrive with the Microsoft 365 Family plan to back up my folders so perhaps I'm not the person to help here.

If I try to uncheck the Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders I get a notification telling me to first go to the Backup tab and stop the backup and then perhaps I will be able to uncheck folders after stopping the backup.

When you select (check) folders to sync (at Account tab > Choose folders) you are selecting which online OneDrive folders that you want to sync locally to your PC. When checked they will download if not already downloaded and will sync to your PC.

If you don't want to sync your PC's Pictures folder to OneDrive then go to the Backup tab and stop the backup of the Pictures folder. The same goes for your Desktop and Documents folders.

The OneDrive storage may get full after the selections you make.
