Windows 10: Why does the Windows Update KB5040427 fail to install and I get Error message 0x80070026...

My desktop has been trying to update 2024-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems KB5040427 for days. It fails to install at least 7 times and keeps giving me error code 0x80070026. I tried the optional update "2024-07 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems KB5040525" but it has also failed installation with the same error code 0x80007026. However, KB5041355 and KB1041019 installed just fine before the failed installation of KB5040427 and those updates have a higher update number than the one that is failing to instal

Windows Updates failed to instal

I just did step one and they have just all installed.... thank you so much.... it was quite frustrating having that update window pop up every 5 minutes and failing to instal every time

Windows Update KB31566421 will not install - Error 0x80070026

Before doing the Clean Boot I went back and performed the initial process, using the Windows File Explorer and Task Manager to verify the steps.

net stop wuauserv (successful)

net stop cryptSvc (successful)

net stop bits (successful)

net stop msiserver (already stopped)

Used the Windows File Explorer to rename directories.

SoftwareDistribution (renamed successfully)

catroot2 (had to stop cryptSvc again to rename this directly)

Started up the services above and rebooted. The update downloaded, but did not install. Still reporting the Error 0x80070026.

Followed the Clean Boot procedure and restarted. Once again the updated downloaded installed about 99% and the reported the Error 0x80070026.

Attempted to install the update from the saved downloaded version from the clean boot environment as I did earlier. Once again the update appeared to install, but then reported that the "Security Update for Windows (KB3156421)" was not installed.

Any other suggestions? I see that others are experiencing the same issue with this update.

Still no luck. Here's what I did:

1. Ran Windows update troubleshooter. It reported "Problems found" and "Windows Update components must be repaired" with "Fixed" and a green check mark.

2. Let the Windows update automatic process run. Once again the updated downloaded installed about 99% and reported "Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3156421) - Error 0x80070026."

3. Re-ran Windows updated troubleshooter. Reported the same as step 1 above.

4. Ran Windows update standalone. Once again the update appeared to install, but then reported that the "Security Update for Windows (KB3156421)" was not installed.

5. Ran svc /scannow and it reported "Windows resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"

6. Re-ran Windows updated troubleshooter. Reported the same as step 1 above.

What do you suggest next? Thanks...
