Windows 10: Why does updating Windows 10 make it SO slow, and is there any fix for it?

I reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 10 in November to give my computer a fresh start, and it ran flawlessly fast for weeks.

Then as soon as I decided to let it update and everything finished and restarted, it's been incredibly slow ever since.

It's a 2017 laptop and runs most games well as long as they're not super-demanding, so it's not like its specs are the issue. It has tons of free space, no viruses, and I have certain resource-draining features that are known to slow down Windows disabled (which doing so has noticeably improved performance, but not nearly enough).

Like I'm honestly thinking of switching back to Windows 7 or 8.

FIXED!! Windows 7 sp1 never ends searching for updates

Yeah, I've been noting it for months on the refusenik thread. They do NOT want anything older than 10 running.

I still have an HTPC on W7, and every other month I have to fix the update agent in order to get all updates. SMH....

You provided a good step by step fix. I've bookmarked it for future reference.

 

windows 10 slow boot

I was having a slow boot issue on my Windows 7 install a little while back. It would take about 30 - 40 extra seconds to boot up for whatever reason.

I would try following these steps, while this didn't solve my issue, it did increase Read/Write to where it should be.

In the end, I had to reinstall my Windows 7 entirely to fix the booting issue. It was taking around 35 seconds to boot, and after the fresh install it takes about 7 seconds to boot.
