Windows 10: Why does Windows c drive shrinks and grows automatically? Is there a way to disable it or...

I've seen a question about this on this community before and it made me clear that it isn't happening because I was hacked or something like that, but it didn't solve my problem and the thread was already closed. I've seen cases where the space went up to 20 GB and then shrank back to less than 2GB and kept varying without me installing a single file. Now this problem got worse and I can't create even a text file, because I supposedly ran out of space. Does someone know how can I fix that? I would be very grateful.

Try defragmenting your C drive before attempting to shrink you drive, there may be some unmovable files that are causing this

If you still cannot shrink your C drive, due to the limited ability of Windows 10 partitioning, it may be best to use a 3rd party utility like the Free version of AOMEI Partition Assistant, which is fully featured and very capable . . .

 

I am not able to shrink volume of my C Drive even though alot of space is free

Hi Rahul,

Disable the paging file and reboot. Shrink the partition, re-enable the paging file, and reboot.

1. Launch systempropertiesadvanced.exe from the Run dialog.
   
2. Under Performance, click Settings, click Advanced button
   
3. Click the Change button.
   
4. Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives
   
5. Select the C drive, select No paging file, and click Set
   
6. Click OK, OK, Yes.
   
7. Reboot.
