    Why does Windows File Explorer struggle so much with missing/null metadata?


    A problem I encounter frequently with Windows File Explorer is it freezing for ~10-30 seconds upon opening a directory with lots of media e.g. ogg, mp4 files. File Explorer will automatically load in columns for videos or music where appropriate, but if the media files themselves don't contain any of the metadata that it's looking for, File Explorer will freeze for up to half a minute. This typically happens when exploring the files of games and programs, which tend to contain lots of audio and video files sans metadata.This freezing issue, while bothersome, does have its workarounds.     Can't see music metadata in Windows Explorer

    I can't see the music metadata on Windows Explorer. I was trying to solve the problem using intructions from here. It doesn't work.

    After installing Windows and drivers I have instlled K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and VLC. Normally, after installing those programs and rebooting of the system metadata was appearing in Explorer. I do not know what went wrong...

    OS: Windows 10 Pro N 64 - may it be caused by the "N" version? I bought european version without WMP. WMP can be necessary to viev metadata?

    Windows 10: Missing lots of metadata on music/video files in File Explorer

    For Music: I used to have columns that display Album and Length, now when I activate these columns on windows 10 all the info is blank. I right click > properties on my mp3's and it doesn't really list there either, and the metadata looks way emptier than

    Works fine on itunes and other players, seems like the metadata is still on the file waiting to be read, but windows file explorer can't read it.

    For Videos: Same thing with the columns. I used to have a frame height column so I can see the resolution of each video, but now all that data is missing except on very few videos. Here's another picture: (http://puu.sh/jytyk.png
