Why does Windows place a newly opened application off-screen?

Why does Windows place a newly opened application off-screen when the associated secondary monitors are turned off?Wouldn't it be smarter to open an application in the primary monitor if the secondary monitor is turned off?

    Windows fails to open applications

    Hi,

Once I have several applications open Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 refuses to open further application. I have heavy-weight applications like Delphi and Eclipse open, but the OS has coped with this in the past.

No error messages are reported by the application I am attempting to open, and there are no messages in the event viewer. What is really strange is that once the OS gets itself into this state, it appears that the OS can't allocate enough memory to perform simple API calls. If I go into an application that is already open and try to open the file menu, or right click on the taskbar to open the context menu, nothing happens.

If I close a few applications, then the problem goes away. The Task Manager performance tab indicates that I still have ~1Gb of physical memory available.

I think this could be caused by:

    - A memory module is damaged. My memory is comprised of 1x1Gb modules. When the system attempts to allocate memory in the second module, it is unable to. I think this is a bit of a long-shot because I wouldn't expect my PC to boot if a memory module was playing-up

    - I've installed something that has put something malicious on my PC. The only things I've installed recently are PRGrep and WinGrep, but unfortunately I didn't make a system restore point, and windows hasn't retained those old restore points. However a full Sophos scan doesn't show-up anything.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose/fix this welcome because I'm baffled as to what is going on.

    Thanks,

    Frank.

Change Screen Saver application will not open

So I wanted to install a new screen saver to add to the list of screen savers in the application and I clicked "Install" on a screen saver and then I tried to open up the Change Screen Saver application and now it won't open. Does anyone have a fix for this? Windows Version 21H1

  4. Why does Windows place a newly opened application off-screen?

Open application window on the screen it was initiated

    Hello,

On multi-monitor setup all the new application windows are being opened on the primary screen, for example:

    • I click on the application in the taskbar on a secondary screen -> it opens on the primary screen
    • I start executable on desktop on a secondary screen -> it opens on the primary screen
    • I click on an image file in the explorer on a secondary screen -> image viewer opens on the primary screen
    • I right click on desktop on a secondary screen and selected "NVIDIA Control Panel" -> the control panel opens on the primary screen
    • I click on start button on a secondary screen and start typing -> the start menu closes and the reopens on the primary screen

This behavior makes little sense and is extremely annoying, especially because I often have a full screen application (a game, virtual machine, remote desktop) running on the primary screen.

Is there a way to change this behavior and open application windows on the screen it was initiated?

Or at least the be opened on the "active" screen (the one with the mouse cursor)...

I'm not interested in switching my current primary display to the other screen, because it would not solve my problem:

    1. Application windows triggered on that screen would still be opened on the primary screen
    2. I want my full screen games to use my current primary screen

    Thanks
