Installing windows off of a USB stick

    Step By Step from vista:
    From admin cmd prompt

    1. diskpart
    1a. list disk
    2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
    3. clean
    4. create partition primary
    5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
    6. active
    7. format fs=fat32
    8. assign
    9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk

Converting or formatting a USB flash drive to fat32

Windows limits FAT32 individual files to 4 GB.

Windows limits FAT32 partitions to 32 GB.

If you need a flash drive to be fat32 and with a partition greater than 32 GB then there are options with third party software.

This is a Windows command line method:

Connect the flash drive to a Windows computer.

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:

    diskpart

    lis dis

    lis vol

    sel dis 0

    det dis

    sel dis 1

    det dis

    sel dis 2

    det dis

    sel dis 3

    det dis

(Identify the disk number for the flash drive.)

(make sure that you identify the flash drive as the clean command will erase everything on the chosen disk #)

sel dis # (replace # with the number of the flash drive)

    clean

    cre par pri

    format fs=fat32 quick

    active

    assign

    exit
