Why doesn't Windows allow more than 24 characters login password

Hi. When I Google the maximum number of characters allowed for a Windows login password it tells me 256 characters but when I try to set a password longer than 24 characters, the field where I type stops at 24. Why is this? Thanks

    :)

Maximum characters Windows login password and/or pin

Hi. When I search on Google what is the maximum number of characters allowed for a Windows login password and/or pin I find most articles to tell me from 127 to 256 characters. I was trying to set a password that was 32 characters long but I could see in the fields where I am asked to type and re-type password that the dots that appear when typing stop at 24 characters. I have Windows 10 Home edition. Please advise. Thanks for your help. Tom

  3. Maximum characters Windows login password and/or pin

Hi Tommiee66! My name is David. I am a user of Microsoft products like you, and it is a pleasure to greet you.

Regarding your query about the maximum number of characters allowed for a Windows login password and/or PIN on Windows 10 Home edition:

For passwords, Windows generally supports very long passwords, often cited as up to 127 characters. However, for PINs, the length is typically limited to 4-6 digits by default but can be increased.

That being said, the behavior you're observing, where the password field seems to stop accepting characters after 24 characters, is unusual. This could be related to a software glitch or an overlaying software that restricts the input.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can take:

    1. Restart your computer: This can often solve a multitude of issues.

    2. Update Windows: Ensure that you have all the latest updates installed. Sometimes, glitches like this are addressed in updates released by Microsoft.

    3. Keyboard input: Ensure that there isn't a keyboard-related issue causing this. You can test this by attempting to type a long sequence of characters in a different application, such as Notepad, to see if the issue persists.

    4. Third-party software: If you have any software that overlays or interacts with the login process (like some security software), it might be limiting the character input. Consider temporarily disabling such software to test.

Let me know if the shared information has been helpful. Regards.

Why doesn't Windows allow more than 24 characters login password

Windows doesn`t start. Authomatic repair doesn`t work.

    Thanks again!!

I`m sorry I had not noticed that the text on the picture was in spanish. It says that windows has replaced some damaged clusters in "name" file and "directory". Then, at the end "an unspecified error occurred (75736e6a726e6c2e 4f6)".

I`ll do it and I`ll be updating this thread when I have the report.

I ran SeaTools. These are the results:

Does it mean my HDD is useless?
