Windows 10: Why has my Windows 10 media player suppenly stoppeed playing .WMV files correctly?

All of the sudden my Windows 10 media player stopped playing .WMV files correctly. The video is choppy to the point of being unwatchable. The files worked correctly before, so I assume this was a change made by an update or possibly Copilot - which I thought I had turned off. Please fix, or is their something else I should do?

Media Player won't play .wmv clips correctly

I have windows media player (MP) on a win10-2004 desktop that won't play .wmv clips correctly. VLC plays them fine, and the clips can be imported to a video editor and it plays them fine as well. So the problem appears to be with mp.

By won't play correctly, I mean that when the wmv clip is opened (rt-click on file, choose open or open with media player) the visual component in the UI is blank/black, but the audio is playing fine.
That same MP plays mp4/mod/mpg files correctly (visual and audio), and audio files in formats of mp3, wma, mid, wav also correctly.

So, what's wrong with MP that it won't play a wmv file?

Hmm.
Tried that last item (via troubleshooting). The scan reset to default but in the last panel said it had found something (no detail).
Then opened that wildlife.wmv file using MP - no change in result (still visual panel black, playing audio).

Responding to the remarks by Pejole2165, a commentary of the wildlife.wmv file. This was a file supplied by microsoft as part of windows 7. I found it very useful as a test file for a variety of situations, mainly in checking/maintaining the audio driver settings for an HD wall screen when using an HDMI connection from a laptop, and have kept using it. So the file isn't crafted by just anyone or any specific player - it was crafted by microsoft for media player. Yet under windows 10 media player cannot play it properly. Beyond that, any wmv file created by other sources that also play correctly in VLC, 123, and several video editors are also not played by mp correctly. So IMHO, that remark about non-standard files just doesn't apply.

Following piko suggestion found this playback item for wmv files in mp options (screenshot). And it wasn't hardware.
The software config for performance had this item set as a default. unticked and wmv files now play in mp.
