Went to manually update Windows Defender (now have Windows 10 installed) and, while I can do both quick and full scans, I cannot run update because it says I have not internet connection, surprising because I am posting this online on the exact same computer!

Windows Defender update fails because no internet connection - but the internet connection is there and working! Any suggestions as to what to do?

Sorry to hear about this. There is a work around to getting Windows Defender back to latest engine and signature set.

The steps below can be found here as well :

1 - From Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update click 'Check for updates' button and see if the latest Definition update for Windows Defender comes down. It should auto download and install then.

2- Froman elevated command prompt (Search > cmd.exe > (Right-Click) > 'Run as Administrator') execute the following commands:

• cd /d "\Program Files\Windows Defender"
• mpcmdrun.exe -signatureupdate

Finally if the above seem to fail - you will need to download the latest package manually:

• 32-bit (X86) - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=121721&arch=x86
• 64-bit (X64) - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=121721&arch=x64
