    Hi, I'd like to know why can I select in a control panel of NVIDIA for example, to output 10 bit and even 12 bit color depth even though the monitor only support 8 bit + FRC making it the simulated version of 10 bit color depth. I assume that there is more data being sent to the monitor, and if so is it used at all if it's not truly supported that way ? I'm not sure which one to go with because typically if you have HDR, you'd select 10 bit, but knowing that 8 bit with dithering is an option, which is the better way to go ?

    Because I want to replace my 27" 1440p with 28" 4K, and as I see it's got an 8-bit+FRC panel (poor man's 10-bit)
    Apart from being able to utilize freesync, will it help me to get an RX Vega 56/64 to get better colors and less banding ? I heard Radeons support 10-bit while nvidia only supports 8-bit.

    8-bit or 6-bit FRC Panel Monitor Type

    Hi there.

    Does anyone know how to find the exact monitor panel color bit? I have tried a few databases around, but they aren't regularly updated nor do they feature any monitors I have looked at. I need to know if they are 6-bit with color dithering or true 8-bit panels. Windows report all of them as 8-bit, and AFAIK Windows will do this regardless of them having frame rate control on 6-bit or not. I've seen some IPS panels with a contrast ratio of 100:1 million, I assume these are true 8-bit? If there's a way without opening something up I would be much appreciative.

    Some panels are also sold as
    6-bit+FRC = 8-bit
    8-bit+FRC = 10-bit
    10-bit+FRC = 12-bit
