  2. .iso extension missing from settings/choose default apps by file type

    This ties partly into my other issue of not being able to mount ISO files in windows explorer. I am getting no luck on fixing that separate issue, so maybe if i tackle it at a different angle, the other problem could be solved as well. Please do not move this issue to Virtualization.

    The Issue

    Basically, in my "Choose default apps by file type" settings window, the .iso extension is missing. I am running Windows 10 Home Version 1809

    In the past, it was there, and also in the past, I was able to mount .iso files by right clicking, and selecting "mount". The option to mount is still there;

    But gives me this error;

    (this is part of my secondary issue being taken care of in another thread (hopefully)) so please don't move this thread to virtualization.

    What I want:

    I want the .iso extension back in my list of extensions in my settings --> default apps--> choose default apps by file type window.

    Things I have tried;

    • 1) Going to Settings - Indexing Options
      2) Advanced button
      3) File Types tab
      4) Add New Extension to List box, type in extension, (without a period) in this case "iso"
      5) Click OK and Close
    • Right clicking any .iso file, and selecting "open with", then selecting "choose another app", and then selecting "Windows Explorer".
    • Right clicking any .iso file, selecting "Properties", then selecting the "Change" button under "opens with" and selecting "Windows Explorer".
    • Restoring the default Windows file extension through registry fix detailed here with OPTION TWO and selecting the .iso reg file, adding it to my registry, and restarting my pc.
    • I created a "fake" extension named .isotest. It successfully appeared in the settings menu(see picture above)
    • Ran "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" in elevated cmd prompt and then "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt. No issues were found.

    In the registry, it shows that iso files are opened with Windows.IsoFile. Looking under the reg key, I cannot tell if anything is incorrect. Below are the reg keys associated with Windows.IsoFile and the .iso key in Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\

    I'm not sure what else to do aside from formatting my pc which I really don't want to do for this issue. Help is greatly appreciated. Please read the whole post before suggesting things please.

    Thanks.

    Apps & Features Choose where to get apps missing

    That's the problem. Option 1, I can't do because the options are missing. I know there is a reg fix but I want to know why I am missing the normal way to change these settings from the "Apps & features" menu

    No ' Choose where to get apps' option on Windows 11

    In Windows 11, the option to "Choose where to get apps" has been relocated to a different section in the settings. Here's how you can access it:

    1. Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon in the taskbar.
    2. Click on the "Settings" icon, which resembles a gear and is located above the Power button.
    3. In the Settings window, click on "Apps" in the left-hand menu.
    4. On the right-hand side, click on "Apps & features."
    5. Scroll down and click on the "Advanced options" link under the list of installed apps.
    6. In the Advanced options, you should see the "Choose where to get apps" section, which allows you to select the source for installing apps. By default, it is set to the Microsoft Store.
    If you're not seeing the "Choose where to get apps" option in the Advanced options section, it's possible that your Windows 11 installation or specific settings might be causing this issue. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Ensure that your Windows 11 installation is up to date. Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any available updates. Install any pending updates and restart your computer if necessary.
    2. Check for any pending driver updates for your HP laptop. Visit the HP support website or use HP's support assistant software to check for and install any available driver updates.
    3. If you're still not seeing the option, you can try running the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter to identify and fix any issues related to the Microsoft Store. To do this, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Look for "Windows Store Apps" and click on it to run the troubleshooter.
    4. Consider reinstalling the AVG security application. If the issue persists, it may be worth uninstalling and reinstalling the AVG security software to ensure a proper installation.
    If the above steps do not resolve the issue, it's recommended to reach out to HP support or the support team of the AVG security application for further assistance. They will have access to specific troubleshooting steps and can provide guidance tailored to your situation.

    Please note that Windows 11 is a relatively new operating system, and certain functionalities and settings may vary or undergo changes through updates. It's always a good idea to consult the latest documentation or seek support from the relevant software or hardware manufacturer when encountering specific issues.
