Windows 10: Why Is HDR Video Quality Distorted in Full Screen Faded/Gray Scale?

I have play HDR games and apps Stream HDR video on in the settings for both my external monitor and my laptop display. I have a Dell Inspirion 15 5000 series laptop and it may or may not be the problem rather than windows 10.


At the bottom of the settings I adjust the brightness, when I go to youtube to look at 4K HDR video, the videos work perfectly when they are in default video and also in theater mode but when I put it in full screen the whole screen dims and all the color is gone. The only way to get the correct color is if I drag something over the video, it seems to work in the background but not in the foreground. Also if I hover the mouse over certain things to bring up the yellow information card the video will clear up also. Another way is I have two monitors, my laptop monitor and my external monitor, if I have a window in full screen on the other monitor while I am watching video the picture quality isn't degraded, it's only when it's in the foreground that the color seems to be degarded.

Poor quality text when using HDR

I can understand that it must be difficult for you when things are not working as it should.

1. What is the make and model of the TV and the computer?
   
2. Are you facing the same issue even on computer or is it only with the TV monitor?
   

I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below to turn off ClearType for the HDMI output connected to TV keeping your regular computer display. To do so,

1. Click on Start, type in ClearType and click on
   Adjust ClearType text option.
   
2. The ClearType Text Tuner app will be opened on the screen.
   
3. Uncheck > Turn on ClearType and click on
   Next.
   
4. You’ll be able to see the options such as Yes, I want to tune all monitors now and
   No, only tune the monitors that I select.
   
5. Select No, only tune the monitors that I select and click on the preferred monitor (TV) and follow the onscreen prompts.
   
6. On the next page, select a text sample that looks most readable to you and click on the Next button.
   
7. Repeat the same step on subsequent pages. You will see 5 screens with text samples in a row.
   
8. Click on the Finish button to accept the changes you made.
   

Meanwhile, regarding the issue with the distorted colors and text quality I would suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it works for you.

Steps to change the display settings to match the resolution of the display:

1. Press Windows + I key on your keyboard, click on
   System.
   
2. Click on Display.
   
3. You will see an option to Select and rearrange displays, click on the display associated with the TV.
   
4. Scroll down to select the ‘Recommended’ option under
   Scale and layout to Change the size of text, apps, and other items, and
   Resolution.

We determined the issue and found out that your computer specs and graphics card are highly capable of enabling HDR and running a 4K video.

Since you've already tested this on Sony TV and its perfectly working fine, we suggest that you
contact your other TV manufacturer’s support team (which is
BenQ) directly for confirmation if this TV is really capable for
streaming HDR videos in Netflix or not.

Netflix has a feature to auto-detect the capability monitors or TVs if they can stream HDR videos or not.
