Windows 10: Why is Microsoft giving me an 8 digit Authentication PIN for Passkey

I want to set up a Passkey account with Google. It's asking for a a 6 digit PIN from Windows/Microsoft. When I ask for an Authentication PIN via Settings -> Accounts -> Sign-in options -> PIN Windows Hello , Microsoft sends me an 8 digit code via Microsoft Authenticator which Google won't accept. What am I doing wrong?

We are supposed to send users with Authenticator questions to Microsoft Q&A but I've spent some time searching

and found a few suggestions that might help.

1. Turn off 2 factor verification on any account that will allow you to do this.

2. For a Microsoft account:

The confusion comes in when you add the Authenticator App to your MS account. There is an option to use 3rd party compatible QR codes. If you select that you will get a 6 digit TOTP vice 8 digit TOTP.

3. Turn two step verification on or off for a Microsoft account

4. For other accounts see if the code can be sent to an email account, not a mobile phone

Microsoft Authenticator gives only 6 digits instead of needed 8 digits

I own a Windows Phone 10 and I need to authenticate with AuthAnvil.

When I add this AuthAnvil account to Microsoft Authenticator then only 6 digits are shown, while AuthAnvil asks for a 8 digit OTP.
