Windows 10: why is my microsoft account name butchered

What is happening? Microsoft update changed my Microsoft account name??? Say: if my local account name was = 'painful', Microsoft changed it to 'painful_xyz2erh' - the display name is correct though.

How do I change the Microsoft Account name to my preferred name?

Microsoft Account Name changed by third party

My account has been changed by somebody other than myself.

My name has been changed to Dean McElroy. I have tried to edit the name but it will not change on the home page or on my PC which is linked to my Microsoft Account.

I followed the instructions given by Microsoft ie

Change the name on your Microsoft account

  Sign in to the Your information page on the Microsoft account website.

  Under your name, select Edit name. If there’s no name listed yet, select Add name.

  Edit or add the name you want, then select Save. Your Microsoft account name will start to appear or change everywhere you use it.
  

If I now select the edit button again my name is presented correctly also on my "Your Info" screen it clearly shows my name as Dave Butcher



How do I resolve this?

 

Remove account


I suggest you backup your personalized files first before removing the account.
To delete an account, follow these steps:

1. Press WIN + X keys and click Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.
2. Type the following command and press Enter. Replace test with the name of your sister's account. Code:

Query about changing the account name

Since you have already changed the name on your Microsoft account, we suggest switching into a local account, and then log back in with your Microsoft account. This way, we can be sure that any changes made to your Microsoft account will be synced to your
local user account.

For steps on how to switch to a local account:

• Click on Start.
• Click on Settings.
• Click on Accounts.
• Under Your account, click on Switch to a local account.

To switch back to a Microsoft account:

• Follow steps 1-3 above to get to Accounts.
• Under Your account, click on Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
