Why is my PC deleting random files, folders and desktop apps every time One Drive is running? I'm pretty certain nobody has gained access or hacked my computer, Malwarebytes doesn't detect any malware either. The only way to stop this happening is to either pause One Drive syncing or even disabling it all together. I'm using a Acer laptop running on Windows 11 BTW. Should I just reinstall One Drive or get a better malware scanner? If anyone can help or knows the solution to this, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

    :)

windows 10 deleted my desktop files

Step 1 - I upgraded to Win 10 and lost all my files on Desktop.

Step 2 - Found the files in Network - USers- Desktop

copied all files again to desktop.

Step 3- Restarted my machine again and lost desktop files again.

Step 4 - As suggested did the following as listed below but dont find my files.

    • Press “Windows + E”, open This PC/Computer
    • Open Local Disc C, open Windows.old
    • Click on Users, select your User name
    • Go to desktop folder
Cant find my files. Why is Win 10 deleted files again and again from Desktop ?.

  3. All Desktop Files & Folders Deleted Overnight! Please Help!

I logged on to Win 10 Professional this morning to find all of my desktop files were deleted. NOT HIDDEN!!

    • I have gone to look for the folders and files via windows explorer, and they are not there. (c:\users\user\desktop). I also checked Public, Default and Default.migrated (last modified 10/5/2016).
    • The last time User (that's me) was updated was 10/9/17. Desktop was last updated 10/9/17 at 10:08 p.m. (I'm not sure if I was logged on at that time or not).
    • Interestingly, the attributes for Desktop is set to Read-only. Hmmmm
    • I've checked the event viewer and see nothing out of the ordinary.
    • Apps that I left running were still up-and-running
    • One file I created yesterday, that was still up and running (a .txt file) was still there.
    • Windows Firewall is running
    • All security patches are up-to-date
    • Computer is regularly scanned for malware
    • Scan this morning turned-up nothing
    • The only listed users are System, myself and Adminstrators
    • Both my password and pin are strong
    • I do not have a folder entitle "window.old" as another solution herein suggests looking in
    • There are no "funky" services running
    • Searching for the files and folder yields nothing

Oh, thank god! They were in my recycle bin.... but I did not do do this. First, all of the folders and files would have to have been selected, delete hit, confirmation requested and given. I definitely did not go through these steps.

    What could have done this?

    Thank kindly!

    Signed, Anxious

  4. Why is my PC deleting random files, folders and desktop apps every time One Drive is running?

Trying to access Desktop files from a SATA laptop drive (Win 7), on a desktop computer (Win 10). All system files and program files are viewable, but not the contents of the Desktop Folder(s).

Trying to access files from a SATA laptop drive (Win 7) on a desktop computer (Win 10). All system files and program files are viewable, but not the contents of the Desktop Folder(s).

The directory for the hard drive appears to include all of the data on the drive. But when I go to Windows_7 OS > Users >, I get the following 4 folders: Administrator, Default (grayed out), Patrick Admin, and Public. Clicking on the Administrator folder, I get a list of folders. The App Data folder and the Desktop folder are grayed out, The Desktop folder has 3 random files and 1 random folder listed. Although these are all grayed out, I can open each of them. Clicking on the Default folder, I get a list of folders. The App Data folder and the Desktop folder are grayed out. The Desktop folder is empty. Clicking on the Patrick Admin folder, I get a list of folders. The App Data folder and the Desktop folder are grayed out, but the Desktop folder here is an icon of the desktop. In the previous cases the Desktop icon was just a folder icon. This folder has 4 shortcuts to 4 random apps which I can click on to open the apps. Finally, when clicking on the Public folder, I get a list of folders. The App Data folder and the Desktop folders are grayed out. The Desktop folder has about 20 or so shortcuts to 20 or so random apps and programs. And these shortcuts open their respective apps and programs.

The SATA drive is showing up as "I" drive in 2 places. It shows up in the directory of the Windows 10 machine under "This PC," and as a separate entity drive, "Windows7_OS (IWhy is my PC deleting random files, folders and desktop apps every time One Drive is running? :)". The directories for both appear to be identical.

The SATA drive is 500GB. My recollection is that it had around 50GBs of free space when the laptop stopped rebooting. A few days ago, the properties dialog box for this drive said that it had 64GB of free space. Yesterday, it said there was 70GB of free space. And today it says there is 69GB free. I ran the Windows "Check disk for errors" utility today -- it found none.

I hope to get some help finding these wayward Desktop files.

    Thank you.
