Why is my R5 1600X getting too hot?

I recently upgraded to Ryzen, got a 1600X with the noctua NH-L9x65 cooler (it was the only AM4 cooler in stock). Using Hardware Monitor, it's been idling in the low 50's, when playing games it gets to 60, but that's with only 30% utilization. Out of curiosity, I got Prime95 and ran it for about 5 minutes and it reached 86C. The cooler isn't amazing, but I imagine it's still better than the stock wraith cooler.

I'm thinking it might be the TIM. I had to RMA my motherboard to get the BIOS updated, and I just left the compound on the face of the CPU and cooler, and then reinstalled when my motherboard returned. Should I have done that? I also have the 8-pin ATX connected - should I only have 4? Would that even make a difference?

    :)

Why is my R5 1600X getting too hot?

    NH-L9x65

The Noctua is recommended for CPUs with a TDP of 84W or less. The 1600X is a 95W processor. In other words, the NH-L9x65 isn't enough cooling for the 1600X.

One relatively cheap fix might be to replace the fan. The Noctua low-profile one (NF-A9x14 PWM) is rated at 50.5 m3/hr (approx. 30 cfm). It's a 92 mm fan. The main downside could be increased noise. (If you replaced it with another PWM fan, that could limit the noise when the CPU isn't running all out.)

Are you aware that Noctua sells a kit that adapts most of their coolers to socket AM4? In the US, it's less than $8.

As far as I know, your CPU would run no cooler if you went to a 4 pin 12V connector rather than the full 8 pin.

Could the 11W really cause this much hassle? HW monitor states 75W power consumption with Prime95.

I have an Akasa Venom cooler that I'm waiting on Akasa developing a bracket for.

I'm starting to realise I really should've invested in the 1600 instead *cry. I ordered these components at the start of last month though.

I have one of those processors and as kit to adapt my CM Nepton 140xl didn't come in yet I installed a cooler from FX 6350. At the beginning temperature seemed to be too high but it was just wrong reading by BIOS and programs. After updating to newest BIOS perceived temperatures fell like a rock. I say "perceived" because at early stages an offset of -20c should be calculated in. Even with non-x you wouldn't get any different reading. Same was happening with FX processors at the beginning, it's just the way AMD measures and detects temps.

I don't know. I also don't know what the maximum acceptable temperature is for the Ryzen chip.

Do AMD CPUs down clock when they overheat, like Intel chips?

They certainly do and AMD is counting down from that temperature.

I've been hitting 3.7GHz typically, and sometimes 4GHz. Doesn't seem to be throttling, but again, that's because at most I've only been utilizing about 40% of the CPU, which won't cause it to heat up that much.
