Windows 10: Why is my USB dongle not working? Is it because it is being rejected by device manager in...

I recently bought a USB WIFI dongle for my laptop and was able to put a SIM card in it. When I connect it to my laptop Acer Aspire running Windows 10, it beeps several times like it's a recognized device then unrecognized and then recognized. I look under device manager and it appears there. My green light for the dongle is on meaning there is data and I am able to see that there is data being exchanged/transmitted on the router login page but I still am not able to navigate. I check device manager and the "portable device" is missing and when I hook it back up it beeps several times informi

What is the exact error you get when you connect the USB dongle?

Run hardware troubleshooter and check if it helps.

• Type Troubleshooting in search box and open it.

• Click on Hardware and Sound
  
• Click on Hardware and Devices.
  

If the issue still persist, I would suggest you to reinstall the USB drivers and check if it helps.

• 
  Press
  Windows Key + X, and select Device Manager
  
• 
  Expand the
  Universal Serial Bus Controllers section by clicking on the
  "+" sign.
  
• 
  Uninstall each of the devices under the
  USB Controller section by right-clicking on each one, and then clicking
  Uninstall.
  
• 
  Close the
  Device Manager and restart your computer. Windows will automatically re-install the USB controllers in your computer, without you having to do anything further. Your computer will now run USB devices properly.

Unknown USB Device - Bluetooth Dongle

I have a generic bluetooth dongle that I got several years ago. I tried to use it today on my Windows 10 PC and I got an error saying it wasn't able to install the drivers.

The device manager says it cannot find the device descriptor.




I've tried different USB ports (USB 2 and USB 3) with the same result. I ran SFC which returned no issues. I have also updated the drivers for my motherboard with the same result when I plug the dongle in. On a whim I even tried it in another Windows 10 PC where it worked immediately.

So to summarize:

• Worked in previous versions of Windows (XP and 7)
  
• Works on other Windows 10 PCs
  
• Works in Ubuntu and OSX
  
• Totally generic, no manufacturer or model number on the casing
  

This question appears similar but provides no actual solution. I am completely baffled, any suggestions?

EDIT

To throw another spanner in the works, I just plugged it into the USB port the side of my screen and it worked immediately. I would still like to know the reasons why it still won't work in the original ports.

To update the USB Controllers from Device Manager follow these steps.

  Select Device manager and a Device Manager window will pop-up.

  Double Click on USB Controllers to expand.
  
• 
  Right click on the USB Controllers that is listed and select Update.
