    Why is my USB drive disconnecting after I open files from it?


    I have a USB drive of thisAmazon.com model and unfortunately whenever I open files from it, as long as there was a considerable amount of inactivity of the drive, it seems to disconnect and reconnect about 3 or 4 times sequentially before it stops. This is very frustrating because it forces files that are already open but in the background to force close whenever being edited again, which currently denies me the liberty of allowing these processes to exist in background CPU usage.

    If someone could let me know why something so unusual like this could be happening so I could fix it I would greatly appreciate it! Why is my USB drive disconnecting after I open files from it? :)

    System connects and disconnects USB drives...

    That too is normal. File Explorer will close if a usb is disconnected while File Explorer was showing its contents, with nothing left to show there's no point in having File Explorer open. The same thing happens if you eject the usb on purpose.

    Try opening Device Manager. Look under 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' at the properties each device listed there. If there is a Power Management tab, try turning off 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'.

    To stop file history using a drive, you can try the steps listed below.



    Ideally, File History will save copies of your files every hour, so disconnecting and reconnecting the backup drive every hour would be a tedious task. However, if you still would like to go for it, you may try the steps listed
    below.



    • Open Settings and go to Update & Security > Backup using File History.
    • Scroll down to Backup to a different drive
      and choose Stop using the drive to disconnect the drive.
    • Later, when you would like to reconnect, go to
      Settings      >
      Update & security>
      Backup>
      Add a drive to reconnect the drive.


    Additional Info: Use File History to backup and restore
    in Windows 10
