Windows 10: Why is my USB2 External hard drive no longer recognized by my W10 desktop PC?

My old Seagate USB2 external hard drive is used to input movies, pictures & music to my TV via a receiver. When infrequently I need to modify its content I do so by copying files directly from my W10 desktop PC. Now, while its TV play is still fine, my PC does not recognize the drive. It last connected successfully at least 2 months ago. I was wondering if a recent W10 update may be the cause.

I understand that the external hard drive is not recognized by the PC. I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.
It would be great if you can answer these questions to assist you in a better way.

• Did you try connecting the Hardrive to different USB Port?
  
• Does the Hardrive get detected if you try connecting it to a different PC?
  
• Are you aware of any changes made to the computer recently?
  

I suggest you refer and follow the steps mentioned in the KB article and check if that resolves the issueError:
“USB Device not recognized” when you try to access a USB external hard drive

Note: Ignore method 2 & 5 from the above article.

External usb drive no longer recognized by W10 backup

Hi Rob,

Maybe my post was not clear enough. Your suggestions only work when the external drive is actually recognized by the backup program, which is not the case (see the title of my post).

Do you have any suggestions about how to get w10 backup to recognize my drive? I can use the drive and see it in the file explorer, but the backup program doesn't see it.

External Hard-drive Recognized on Laptop, but not Desktop

I own a Toshiba 1TB USB 3.0 external hard-drive which is no longer being recognized by my desktop computer, yet my laptop can still read it. It doesn't even show up within disk management. Is there a way to remedy this?
