Windows 10: Why is my Windows 11 computer opening up multiple instances of the same application when it...

I open say Loom My computer bogs right down I CTRL+ALT+DEL to open task manager See that my Disk utilization is 100% See that computer has 10 Loom applications running

Hi. Thank for letting me know that you are "10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation". The 12 links you sent me have nothing to do with the question I posed regarding multiple instances of same application. Is this behavior by design in Win 11 or not - do you know? And is this a taskbar issue - probably not. I mentioned that this behavior happens when launching the app from the desktop also.

 

Multiple instances of Windows Explorer

So in the Processes tab, under Apps, however many Windows Explorers I actually have open is however many it will list, and expanding will list the specific folder that is open, there is no problem there. The problem is when you scroll down to Windows processes, that's where all the multiple instances are. Right now it's only showing 7 but that is because I restarted my computer a couple hours ago, I've counted as many as 40+ before.

How do I force Win 11 to open only 1 instance of an app when I select it's icon from the toolbar or desktop? In Win 10, when I opened an app such as Notepad, I could then open my browser or any other app and Notepad would be minimized on the toolbar (unless I had the Windows tiled or cascaded). While the browser app still had focus, I could click on the Notepad icon again to maximize the 1 instance of Notepad. The focus would then go to Notepad. It worked great!

In Win 11, if I clicked on the Notepad icon a second time, it will launch a 2nd instance of Notepad. Not horrible except that once 2 or more instances are active, I can no longer click on the toolbar icon to the app (maximize it or get focus) - it becomes frozen. My only resort is alt-tab - so un-elegant to use. Is this by design? PLEASE fix this horrible downgrade.
Is there another way - what am I missing?
