Why is my Windows backup image bigger than the combined size of the partitions backed up?

This has been asked before on this site, and no one has really spoken to my question.

Im not necessarily a rookie but open to learning new things about familiar processes.

Have used windows back up windows 7 version to make disc images for a few years now. I've restored images to the computers they were created on with no issues. Not trying to migrate the image to another PC, I dont see a need to download a third party app when the function i want is native to windows and works fine for what its intended to do. SO a solution telling me to download some app is not going to count or explain my question. I want to know why it happens, not really concerned right now with how to avoid it.

I have a C drive that uses 42 GBs. I included the EFI and recovery partitions which add another GB to the total. I know that windows copies the page file and this can be deleted to trim off some of the total. The shadow copies that get created with system restore are managed to not much more than a GB and I believe they already count towards the 42GB im seeing on the drive. My situation is that, the prompt tells me I should expect to use 43 GB of space. I know 43 is the correct number. However when the process is complete, the total space used balloons to 58GB or so. Where is this extra 15GB coming from? Why doesn't it get calculated to the total that the prompt creates?

    :)

    Partition Sizes?

My new system has 2 150 g Raptors in Raid0. I normally keep the O/S on one partition, installed applications on another, and my paging file on another partition. With a volume size of 300 gigs, what would you suggest as far as partition sizes are concerned?

Thank-You. *Smile Why is my Windows backup image bigger than the combined size of the partitions backed up? :)*Smile Why is my Windows backup image bigger than the combined size of the partitions backed up? :)

System Image Backup Failed In Windows 10

    Hi,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community. I am sorry to know that you are facing issues with Windows 10.

I do appreciate your efforts and time, and will assist you with the issue.

    Method 1

Step by Step on how to fix the (0x8078007D) error.

    • Close Backup and Restore.

    • Delete the Image Back folder (WindowsImageBackup) located in the destination drive.

    • Open Disk Management. (Start/Computer/Manage/Disk Management.

    • Note the size in GB for the partition (typically C Why is my Windows backup image bigger than the combined size of the partitions backed up? :) Windows is installed on.

    • Right click on the Windows partition (typically C Why is my Windows backup image bigger than the combined size of the partitions backed up? :) and select ‘Shrink Volume’.

    • In the ‘Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB’ box enter the value: 1024 (1.0GB) as shown above.

    • Click the ‘Shrink’ button. When the process has completed you will see ‘Unallocated’ space equal to 1.00 GB as shown below.

    • Right click on the Windows partition and select ‘Extend Volume’

    • Click on the ‘Next’ button in the ‘Extend Volume Wizard’ window. The ‘Maximum available space in MB’ value should be 1024 minus 1 (1023, see step 6 and image below). Click the ‘next’ button to reclaim the unallocated space.

    • Click the ‘Finish’ button.

    • Disk Management should now report the size of the Windows partition equal to what you observed in step #4.

    • That’s it, you’re done. You can now run the ‘Backup and Restore’ feature.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.
