Windows 10: Why is system restore disabled by default?

Are you saying it was just disabled on clean install or you were unable to enable it after clean install. I noticed mine was disabled after clean install, but i just did it way Cliff S showed as i always do. If clean install why worry if it was enabled yet, upgrade i can see maybe. Just trying to understand this post, reasons for registry changes.

 

It was disabled after clean install, just trying to automat the process of enabling it.
The main idea though is, why it is even disabled, when some people have it enabled.

 

I could see such reg changes being used for unattended installation, specially when you want to create a custom install media.

 

Yes was same here for me, right after clean install, but before i put anything on my system i usually check this. Not sure why, but as long as you enabled it, still not getting point of trying to automat it for when ? Do another clean install or does keep going off ?

 

But back to your original question( a good one at that) I guess that maybe during install(when winsat is first run maybe) it checks if there is enough disk space or good enough CPU for VSS, as smaller devices such as phones and tablets don't. Also the old SSD tweak argument, on the older ones it was too many unnecessary writes some believed(I leave it on personally).

What are your thoughts/guesses?

 

I think, you have solved it, I have partion set to 40GB, that seems reasonable. *Thumbs

This forums actually post tutorials, which sometimes include reg options as well, so no big deal, it is just another way of doing things, like I found this done via cmd: Change Disk Space Usage

Do not even remind me, just yesterday, I had to install Windows 5 times, because of an activation issue.

I had 10240 RTM before, activated via an upgrade process 8.1 to 10 and then clean 10 without a key. But when I did a clean setup with new ISO from MS after 29-th July, activation did not work, so I used the original ISO, it did not work. So I had to go through the whole process again, install 8.1, then 8.1 to 10, then clean 10. Anyway, there are still some issues, so I plan to reinstall 10 again and again until I get it fixed and I try to make it as painless as possible. When you do it so many times, you can not even tell, if you have had setup something now or last time, so you can easily miss some things.

 

That must be a real headache

 

I've found System Restore is mostly switched off after installation. Disk space is a good theory, as I'm often installing on a VM, and my old physical hardware has a small C: partition.

It was disabled for me after upgrading from W7 Ultimate to W10 Pro. No clean install just upgraded through Windows Update. It was on and configured to my specs in W7 when I did the upgrade, but I had to manually reconfigure it in W10. I have more than enough space on my drive (183GB free).

 

To turn on System Restore, hit Windows button and Pause/Break key. In System Properties, highlight your "C" drive and click "Configure". This now allows you to turn on System Restore. Size or type of drive doesn't matter. Took me 2 days to figure out I had to highlight the "C" drive.

 

After upgrade to W10 a lot of setting were not carried over but it seemed to work ok. I found system restore was switched off so switched it back on. Seemed like a big mistake as system became unstable, after this errors in file system kept creeping in (file location \\?\volume\xxxxxxxx) on any new file created. Tried various repair options non worked and system became so unstable I was forced to revert to W7. Unfortunately the same file save errors kept occurring. I am now running disk check and it seems like it is repairing all the files on my data drives. I have upgraded five computers to date and all have worked flawlessly without system restore switched on. The only problem machine is the one that I switched system restore on. Maybe small (128GB SSD) system drive or raid 10 array for data drives issue, as these are the only major differences between the different systems. Anyway I will see what the disk repair turns up and reinstall W10 and run it without system restore and see what happens. There maybe issues that do not yet have a universal answer and MS used the failsafe of switching system restore off, interesting to find out eventually.

 

Yep 128GB SSD was disabled for me also, it stopped me reading disk images until I turned it back on after deleting the windows old folder.
