Windows 10: Why is there a 2 next to Word, Excel, Google and 2 other apps only when pinned to task bar...

A couple weeks ago, I had an issue with OneDrive. I needed to locate a file, and I what curious to see if it may have been available in the One Drive storage. When I launched OneDrive, of course it begins 'uploading and updating' and something happened that I did not detect until I found a boat load of missing files suddenly disappear from files stored in my documents folder, especially one under my Financial folder. Fortunately, I had all those files 'backed up' on my external drive. So, I decided to never ever go any where near OneDrive again, and use ONLY my external drive for backup files.

The excel shortcut cannot be pinned to taskbar

Dear Vanessa, sorry for the long wait.

With the help of your your suggestions I now have a much better understanding of when a shortcut can be "pinned' to the task bar.

When I open a "txt" file in word (or in an other Office pgm) I am unable to pin the "Word icon" (or whatever) on the bar, but if I open a non-Office pgm (I used Ultraedit) I can pin the UE icon to the bar.

When I said I could not make the icon of an EXCEL pgm "stick", I had noticed that a popup claimed that it was already pinned i. e. I already had an EXCEL icon on the task bar which I use to open EXCEL. I then realized that in response to a click on the
EXCEL icon I obtain a window that shows a list of recent EXCEL files. This usually contains the file that I want to open.

Pinning word docs to task bar.

Pinning word docs to task bar. Three days ago and ten years prior, I could pin regularly used word doc to the word icon in my task bar. This was done by dragging and dropping the file from File Explorer to the Windows icon on task bar. Then if I right clicked the windows icon the doc would be on the list to select.

I’m not talking about random recent docs, I’m talking about ones I specified. You could also do this by right clicking the doc in File Explorer and selecting pin to taskbar. Today, with a new PC with windows 11, I can’t get this to work. Neither drag and drop (you get a no entry sign) nor Pin to Task Bar (no option visible) will work. I saw another post on this topic but it missed the point and is closed so I can’t comment there

It’s the same in XLS too. Both programs are brand new but I can’t advise the version because the ABOUT item is no longer shown under HELP which conveniently showed the Software Version.

Excel on Windows 10 taskbar does not show recent files

Actually, I had the same problem, (with Notepad, Excel, Word, a few others but not all)

1. I deleted the files as suggested by RGera (not sure if that made a difference)

2 Then I unpinned the item from the task bar - I had to go to the Start Menu, Click the right arrow beside the item, click 'More', then 'UpPin from taskbar'

3. Re-pin by doing the last steps from Start Menu, except click 'Pin to Taskbar'

This should work for Excel, Word, or anything.
