Windows 10: Why is this vmmem using 400 mb of ram, when i dont have a virtual machine running

Why is this vmmem using 400 mb of ram, when i dont have a virtual machine running.Every time i start my computer this program uses 400 mb of ram is this a virus disguised or a virus using a virtual machine to do stuff for example mining crypto?[Note : I didn't know what topic to pick so this could be wrong topic.

Thanks for response. In short - what you are observing - Linux machine that you run with WSL2 runs in context of VMMem process - so if you run VSCode from within Ubuntu - there is no "code.exe" process but it's in context of "vmmem.exe" process - you started
"code" process inside WSL2 - Linux Virtual Machine, which is hosted by vmmem process - the more you run with WSL2, the more VMMem process will consume resources. Are you able to see this correlation? What happens with usage after you close VSCode?

Windows Vmmem active when I don't have Virtual Machine conscisouly running

Dear community,

since a few days I observed that a task called "Vmmem" takes up some of my RAM according to the Windows 10 task manager. I am unsure why this is the case and how I could stop it.

I started developing a selenium webdriver program in VS Code using the headless chromedriver at around the same time the task was first shown. However, the task also stays active after executing my program and even after quitting VS Code.

Could Vmmem be related to my script or what else could I look into to stop the Vmmem task?

Of course, the answer is: it depends. Not any help though.

Virtual machines require quite a bit of dedicated RAM. Your host machine and OS require whatever it requires to run efficiently. If your host is running Win10 you will be using most of your available RAM. If any background processes are running you are eating
up even more.

Now it depends on the Virtual Machine and OS you are starting inside the Guest environment. Virtual Box is very configurable by the user, so you will easily know its separate requirements. Then it depends on what you are actually doing inside the Virtual
box. If you want to run Video you will eat up even more RAM.

4 gig of Ram is not a lot these days. Barely enough to run Win10 alone.

Obviously the more RAM you can stuff into a machine the more you will be able to have running simultaneously. Unfortunately, older motherboards may be constrained as to how much RAM they are capable of running. My Gateway has a max of 8 gig ram.

I can buy bigger RAM sticks and have slots available to install them but this motherboard is limited to using 8 gigs. I learned that one the hard way.

Best bet is a newer computer and stuff as much RAM as possible into it.
