Why is W10 so inefficient on some UI interactions?

With the anniversary update, the performance on my netbook has worsened, this is relating mainly to display and UI animations.
In my netbook, how it's possible that simply running the mouse over the Start menu's items or scrolling through the app list is so sluggish and makes the CPU go over 60%, by Windows Shell Experience Host and Desktop Window Manager, while the same thing on Windows 7 the CPU usage is almost 0 - 10%. How is that a simple thing as highlighting menu options or scrolling needs so much CPU compared to previous version?

In my desktop, the CPU usage is around 5% when hovering and 16% when scrolling, which IMO is still high for a relatively simple thing but no lagging.

The same thing happens to Office 2016, hovering over the toolbars you see a enormous lag in the highlighting effect and high CPU usage.

Can anyone explain this? Is maybe because of the composition engine given the DWM CPU usage

    Thank you *Smile

    :)

Some beef with the Metro UI. Why is header text so huge and take up so much space. Imagine if this was on a blackberry. Why do you have to scroll just to get to a sub-section?

If I need to get to the last item ...I should scroll to the left? Brilliant!!

What solution do you have if I want to get to the item in the middle? Is there a secret button that would get me there without continuously either left or right till I get there, while at the same time loading items I have no interest in?

I'm not denying that fact that Metro is not a great UI paradigm... but it has it flaws..

  3. Some beef with the Metro UI. Why is header text so huge and take up so much space. Imagine if this was on a blackberry. Why do you have to scroll just to get to a sub-section?

The Metro UI was designed to give you a panoramic experience while navigating. Displaying sections in a menu format is what you get with the competitors. Metro presents the user with a constant flow of info as you scroll to the right or left. It presents
a better user experience than being presented with a list of sections within the app, requiring you to select the section you want, than waiting for it to load, than once you are done with the section, now you have to go back to the main menu on the main page,
only to have to select another section, than wait for it to load, and so on and so on. How is that better than having it all before your eyes in a panoramic layout. You just scroll through the sections. If it takes a few seconds to load all the info as you
scroll, at least it will load once instead of every time you open a section, which is what you are claiming would be better. Once it does load, which is almost instantly, you can scroll in a pnaramic setting back and forth, no more waiting. The list method
is old school and far from what what Microsoft was aiming for. Having access to only one section of the info provided is not "Glance and Go". In regards to the Huge header, again this is the Metro UI styling and is a matter of personal taste. Also, the
Metro UI wasn't developed for the tiny screens on the Blackberry, so this is really a none issue. I'm not saying the Metro UI is perfect, but in my opinion, it provides a better user experience then the icon grid and old school menu & sections layout presented
in apps offered by the competitors.

By opening Start you basically open all the apps in the Start, especially if you have live titles enabled.
AU is quite a hog on slower computers. You could try to optimize/disable a few things to keep it going.

    Thank you

I did remove all tiles and resized the Start menu, leaving only the calendar and weather just after install W10 because the default start menu with all preinstalled metro apps was so huge it took almost all the small netbook screen when opened *Smile (and still is too big for the 1024x600 screen)

Also I did disabled all checkboxes in performance settings, leaving only shadow under cursor and smooth edges of screen fonts *Smile

  6. All I can say, that after the upgrade, a browser was opening for 15 SECONDS, I have to use caps, because that was outrageous. After performing a maintenance and some tweaks, it dropped to 2 seconds. Try this, maybe it will help.

Run CMD as admin and copy/paste/enter:

    chkdsk /scan
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase
    winmgmt /salvagerepository
    del "%temp%\*" /s /f /q
    del "C:\$Recycle.bin\*" /s /f /q
    del "%systemroot%\temp\*" /s /f /q
    vssadmin delete shadows /for=c: /all /quiet
    cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

Do not forget to perform HDD defrag with the software of your choice.

Is there a way to disable gamepads from interacting with Windows 10 UI?: Windows 10 didn't originally have this feature, but one of the updates made it so that pressing A on a gamepad (Logitech's old school one, XBox 360, or XBox 1) counted as clicking on the currently highlighted item. It also made the DPad navigate in menus, and other changes....
