Why is Windows 10 Search such unmitigated trash?

How does it miss these things? For example:

I search for "teamspeak" it finds nothing when it is RIGHT THERE in the start menu.

I can search for VMware, and as you see in the screenshot, its right there yet search does not find it. I am very used to rapidly typing the name of an application in Windows 7 search and it finding it before I am even done with the word, I press enter and it opens very fast.

Yet not with Windows 10. It only seems to want to find build-in windows applications (e.g. paint) this way.

Am I missing a setting or something or is Windows 10 search just garbage? I miss Rover :*(

If it is just this trash, does anyone know of any alternative search software for windows?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Beware!

Edge and Start Menu Failure in Windows 10. This eventually made my computer useless. I had to restore to the original Windows 7 and lost everything on the computer. This is an unmitigated disaster. Another computer became very slow!

Window 10 - an unmitigated failure

I eventually downloaded a new MSI of the updated image and carried out a fresh install - something that shouldn't be necessary - had MS taken care not to cause untold errors with their images !!

Well I don't use Windows search hardy at all anymore, I use a program called Everything, has lots of features, that you can customize and is a FREE app. Try it. I put a shortcut for it on my toolbar, much better than Windows Search.

I use "Classic Start Menu". It comes with and app called: "Classic Shell". I like its search function for how simple it is to the eye. It gives me a list of my results. Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements
But I am assuming that you don't want to replace your whole Start Menu with this customizable one.

Search for, and open, Indexing Options. At the top, does it say that the indexing is complete, or does that magnifying glass go in circles and that number is increasing?

I thought classic shell wasn't being developed any more?

Dec 3rd, 2017 - Classic Shell is no longer actively developed

After 8 years I have decided to stop developing Classic Shell. The source code for the latest version is released on SourceForge. More details here.

Ok, back to the original problem, which is why doesn't Windows search do the right thing? As far as I am aware it should work as intended and does so on my computers. I gave up on Start 8/10 when it would break after a new Windows update. I've gotten very used to doing just what the OP does, type in a name and hit return, often before I type the first few letters. In fact, it seems pretty handy with some abbreviations. Like "ie" for Internet Explorer or "cue" for Corsair Utility Engine.
@Culbrelai did you turn off Windows indexing somewhere? Or change it's default search locations?

I can confirm that the Windows built-in search from the Start menu works fine on each of the desktop computers and laptops I use. Using the latest Windows Update from MS.

pepanee is tallking about Classic Start Menu but there is also Start Menu 8

It's not free but you get a trial version. If you want free then you need the old version (I use it)

Old version is here: Download Start Menu 8 3.1.0.3 for windows - Filepuma.com

Note: You have to use your firewall to block the updater and preferably remove the update exe file and disable the update task. Can't give exact details.

It has search built in and it's fast. I keep windows file search turned off.

For a more in depth very fast seach on NTFS formatted drives I use SwiftSearch.
It accepts file names and/ or paths with wildcards in needed.

    SwiftSearch download | SourceForge.net

SwiftSearch alternative includes deleted file search:

For searching text within files I use UltraFileSearch.

    UltraFileSearch - File Search Utility

I never did find much use for Windows Search.

  12. Probably boils down to that there is no real competition for Windows operating systems except for Mac and Linux.
When you virtually have a monopoly on the market, you dont need to try so hard.*Sad

Thing is search seemed fine in Windows 7. They broke it in 8, fixed it in 8.1 and now it’s apparently broke again.

Wish they’d quit fixing what isn’t broken.

Apparently I'm unmitigated trash and not Windows 10 Search.

    Go to search, type "index"

An applet called "Indexing Options" will appear, open it.

This is an application I have never in my life seen before in Windows and I've used every version since WFW 3.11

    Click "Modify"

Here's a list of all your drives. I checked every single one of those suckers. Not even my boot drive was checked for indexing and its a 2.2 GB/s read SSD...

So I'm not entirely trash, but whoever wrote those defaults needs to be fired... wth Windows 10...

ATM its "Indexing" and it's at around 30,000 items. Before I checked all the drives, it was at 5,000. it says 'Items' not files, folders, but 'items'.

I will report back when its done to see if it fixes my start menu searching problems.
