  1. Why is windows hogging all the disk write/read capability every time I boot it? Goes on for...

waas, compatibility telemetry, system, and various other windows services keep using up all disk throughput, leaving no space to work for other applications. This is on a new Windows install that I only use for gaming. The only things installed are Firefox, drivers, and steam.

Downloading a 10gb game takes about an hour. And my network is capable of 20MB/s. It keeps downloading in small spurts and then waits for disk to become available. On my Linux install which I typically use I can download at 20MB/s, decompress, and write to disk at 25MB/s without problem. With the same hardware, as this is a dual boot.

This problem is driving me insane, basically if I want to get a game of 50gb+ I have to leave it overnight to complete the download. Is there anything that can be done to remedy this problem? Or can anyone tell me just what the hell Windows is even doing? It sounds like the HDD is just seeking all over the disk.

Hard Drive 100% active time on every boot up, with very low read and write speeds, any help?

So I am running an HP laptop with a 1TB hard drive, a Hitachi 5400rpm drive. On windows 8 and on windows 10, nearly every boot up (from Shut Down and Sleep) causes my disk to have 100% active time and read speeds in the neighborhood of 3-10 MB/s, writes
of 5MB and often less. It becomes extremely slow and during this 2-5 minute period, taking an entire minute to launch any programs like Chrome. here is a coppied graph data from task manager, pay attention to active time, reads, writes, and respince times; Disk

Yesterday, I found a thread that could stop Windows Defender from hogging most of this problem, and altered it in resource manager, yet it STILL uses 30-70% disk activity on most every boot up. Task manager shows many different programs that would be easy,
background, small tasks, becoming a huge struggle and they too start to hog as much disk time as possible, when they should only use a few, maybe 10% disk time and my drive should be reading at 100 MB/s and writing at 90 MB/s.

    If anyone has a solution for this, it would be much appreciated. If anyone knows this as a hard drive failure, please let me know. Here is what a good Task Manager load looks like;

Slow HDD read and write speeds

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We will require a few more information from you to help you further with the issue. Please reply with the following details:

    • In which device are you facing this issue?
    • Are you using an external HDD or internal HDD?
    • Are you getting the read and write speed issue on any particular application?

However, you can Disk Defragment on your computer to optimize the drive. To run Disk Defragment please follow the steps from the article

    Defragment your Windows 10 PC
    .

Alternatively, you can check for the read and write speed of the HDD in task manager. Please follow the steps mentioned below to check the read and write speed of the hard drive:

    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc key together on the keyboard.
    2. Click on Performance tab.
    3. Click on Disk 0.
    4. You will find the Read speed and
      Write speed
at the bottom of the window.

    Hope it helps.

Please reply with the status of the issue, we will be glad to help you further.

How To Format A Write Protected Flash Memory ?

    ¿You already tried this one?...

    Run CMD

    1. diskpart
    2. list disk

Then in the 3º step, put the correct number of disk in the list for the usb flash (if it's listed in disk 3, then you'll have to write select disk 3).

    2. select disk #
    3. clean
    4. create partition primary
    5. select partition 1
    6. active
    7. format fs=fat32
    8. assign
    9. exit

with that commands you will format the flash drive in fat32, if you have a large drive you can select also "format fs=ntfs" in step 7.

    good luck!
