Why is Windows Update able to override my settings and even remove my entire folder...

I have no idea how Microsoft are doing this BUT I am sick and tired of fighting update attempt to my Windows 10 installation. For the umpteenth time I have disabled "wuauserv' and stopped it with ""services.msc".The very next day? You guessed it. Worse still a few weeks back when Ilooked for my folder "1-1-1-Disable and Enable Updates" I found it suddenly empty. And of course I am once again stuck with a valuable waste of HDD space with another rotten folder [renamed] $WINDOWS.~Bla to get rid of plus other folders in the Windows Directory. Now all of this is relatively new after many previous ye

?? How do I PW protect Folders in windows

    hmmm?
Sharing files and folders overview You can share the files and folders stored on your computer, on a network, and on the Web. The method you choose depends on whom you want to share files with, and what computer they will use to access the files.

When you share files or folders, they are not as protected as they are when you do not share them. People with access to your computer or your network might be able to read, copy, or change files that are in a shared folder. You should always be aware that the files and folders that you share are available to other people and be sure to monitor your shared files and folders on a regular basis.

    Important

If your computer is not joined to a domain, you can use the Network Setup Wizard to automatically turn file and printer sharing on or off. To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Setup Wizard.
If you both use the same computer

You can put the files you want to share in the Shared Documents folder. Files stored in the Shared Documents folder or its subfolders are always available to other users on your computer.

    Step-by-step procedure
    Note

If you are connected to a network domain, the Shared Documents, Shared Pictures, and Shared Music folders are not available.
If both computers are on the same network

You can share a folder or drive on your computer with others on the network. You can also control whether the files in the shared folder can be modified by other users.

If your computer is connected to a network domain, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
If your computer is connected to a workgroup, use this procedure:

    Step-by-step procedure
    Note

If you are connected to a network domain, you will need to set the Access control for the folder or drive after sharing it. For more information, go to To set, view, change, or remove file and folder permissions.
If you want to share your files online

You can publish pictures and documents on the Web using the Web Publishing Wizard. The files will be stored in a private, online folder that you manage.

    Step-by-step procedure

If you don't want others to access your files

You can prevent other users from accessing your folders and the files they contain. When your computer is connected to a domain, this is called setting permissions for your file or folder. When your computer is connected to a workgroup, this is called making your folders private.

    Windows Updates failed to instal

I'm not sure how differant XP media center Edition is but you could clear the history \ cache if these folders are there.

    Step 1 Register DLL files.

    =================

By trying this step, we can check if the update engines are working properly.

    1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer.

    2. Click Start and Run, type "Regsvr32 atl.dll" (without quotes) in the Open box and click OK.

Note: There is a space between regsvr32 and atl.dll

    3. Similarly, one by one, register the files listed below:

    Regsvr32 msxml3.dll

    Regsvr32 wuapi.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

    Regsvr32 wups2.dll

    Regsvr32 wucltui.dll

    Regsvr32 wups.dll

    Regsvr32 wuweb.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgr.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

    Regsvr32 jscript.dll

Note: If you encounter errors while registering any of these files then skip that file and continue with the next one.

If the issue persists, let's move on to the steps below to verify Windows Update services and temporary folders.

Step 2 Verify the relevant Windows Update services.

    =========================================

    1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.

    2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".

    3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.

    4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.

    5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the button "Stop" under "Service Status" to stop the service.

    6. Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.

    7. Please repeat the above steps with the other services:

    Background Intelligent Transfer Service

    Event Log

    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Note: Event log service is enabled on all of the hardware profiles; this service does not have an option to enable or disable on certain hardware profile.

If it still does not help, let's proceed to step 3.

Step 3 Reload the Update temporary folders.

    ===================================

One possible cause is that the temporary folder for Windows Update is containing corrupted files. Let's erase all the files there to get the system clean.

    1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net stop WuAuServ

    2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

    3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.

    4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net start WuAuServ

Please test the Windows Update website and let me know the result. If the issue persists, to clarify the issue and provide more accurate troubleshooting steps, please assist me in collecting the following information.

    ???Windows XP Update???

Try at YOUR own risk. And you MIGHT want to ty the other thing after(Windows Updates failed to instal).

What happens when you try update though IE ?..

Step 1: Remove the temporary folders of Windows Update.

    1. Restart the computer.

    2. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.

    3. Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter.

    4. After we log on, please click Start, click Run, type in "cmd" (without quotations) and press Enter. Please run the following commands in the opened window to remove the folder.

    - Type in "RD /s %windir%\softwaredistribution" (without quotations) and press Enter. Please press Y when you are prompted to remove the folder.

    - Type in "RD /s %Windir%\System32\Catroot2" (without quotations) and press Enter. Please press Y when you are prompted to remove the folder.

WARNING: Please do not remove the folder "Catroot" which is a system folder.

    5. Please also browse to C drive and delete the folder WUTEMP. If you cannot see the folder, please click start, run, type in "cmd" and press Enter. After the DOS command window pop-ups, please type in "RD /s C:\wutemp" and press Enter to delete the folder.

Step 2: Reset the permission of the local hard drives.

    ========================================

    1. Click Start, click Run, type "%windir%\help" (without quotation marks) and press Enter to open the Help folder.

    2. Click Start, Run, type "%windir%\system32" (without quotation marks) and press Enter to open the System32 folder.

    3. Open the attachment secedit.zip, copy and paste the file secedit.exe into the folder System32; copy and paste the file secedit.htm into the folder Help.

    4. Click Start, click Run, type the following command and then press ENTER.

    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

Important: The command is complicated, therefore I suggest you copy and paste the above command into the Run box.

After running the command, you will receive a "Task is completed" message, and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message.
