  1. Why must I completely close Microsoft Edge in order to manage OneDrive files and folders?

SummaryAt work, we're not allowed to save some documents locally on our workstation C:// drives. We must save everything to OneDrive. Throughout the day, I do a lot of file/folder management. Rename documents, Move documents, Rename folders... etc. Back when I could do all this on my C:// drive, it was not an issue. As long as a file... for example a Word .docx file... is closed... you can move it, rename it... do whatever. And as long as all files within a folder are closed, you can easily rename/move the folder. However, now that I have to do everything through OneDrive, whenever I try to m

Changing listing order of files and folders in File Explorer

When you log into an account for the first time there is a chance to decline OneDrive "protection" for your user folders, but it's easy to miss (this is by design, no doubt). It's this automatic "backup" that hijacks folder locations. Sothe first thing to do is check OneDrive settings & make sure backup is disabled for your user folders. This is done via Manage Backup on the Backup tab of the OneDrive settings dialog (right-click the SysTray icon):

When you do this, the folders under This PC will once again point to the folders in your UserProfile folder and not OneDrive. Files must be moved manually.

Once you do this, your user folders are local and only files you explicitly place in the OneDrive folders will be synced to OneDrive.

To move OneDrive to a lower position in the Navigation Pane, set the value of the DWORD value SortOrderIndex under the registry key:

    Code:
to a value like 88. (create the value if it doesn't exist)

    Onedrive File Folder

OneDrive comes with Windows 10, MS doesn't give you a choice whther you want it or not. It's automatically there, in-your-face-, like lots of other Microsoft/Windows bloatware.

If you're not going to use it, uninstall the OneDrive program.

If you logon on to Windows 10 with an MS account, make sure OneDrive hasn't already synch'd your files and uploaded them to the/your OneDrive account.

    So, ....

Close OneDrive (make sure it's closed in the SysTray as well. Then, go to Task Manager and stop OneDrive from starting at start-up.

Reboot. Go to your OneDrive account (outlook.com website, MS account login, top LH corner to access outlook.com facilities). If any files are there in OneDrive, make sure they're only backups (copies), or download them to your device.

Then uninstall OneDrive using Control Panel > Programs and features.

The folder should auto be removed, if not do it manually if you've followed the above steps to protect/retrieve your data.. MS may warn you of all the doom and gloom, fire, flood and pestilence, etc etc if you delete it ... Ignore.

  4. Why must I completely close Microsoft Edge in order to manage OneDrive files and folders?

This PC leads to the OneDrive folder.

    Hi Lance,

There are different factors as to why the default location of the documents and pictures folder on your computer is defaulting to OneDrive. One possible reason is that you setup OneDrive as the default save location of your files. For us to resolve your
concern, kindly follow the steps below:

    • Open File Explorer and from the left-hand panel select the
      Documents
      folder from the list.
    • After selecting the Documents folder, right click on it and select
      properties from the list.
    • Select the Location tab, and click on the Restore Default button. (see screenshot below)

    • Select OK and if prompted to create a folder at the default location, click on
      Yes.
    • If you get a prompt to move all files from the old location to the new default location, click on
      Yes.

Once complete the folder properties windows will close by itself and folder should not be using the default location. Take note that these steps apply to the different folder in your computer.

We look forward to your response once you complete the steps.
