Windows 10: Why my laptop uses only 128mb video memory instead of 8gb?

My laptop has an Intel Iris Xe GPU with 8gb video memory but when I saw it in settings it showed this:

The graphics card has onboard 512MB ram, and only 768MB is assigned to the video memory as shared, and this is how the total video memory is calculated.

BUT!

Shared memory can be used by Windows, so i still searching for the lost part of memory.

I have a laptop with win10 pro x64 with 8GB installed ram and processor graphics. The bios allocate 128MB for the IGP.

The overall ram shows at me Installed: 8GB, usable 7.88GB (because of the dedicated memory to IGP), but allocated shared memory for video card is 4GB, and total video memory is 4.12GB.

So the windows doesn't care about the shared memory, it can be used.

Something else 'drain' the 1.3GB of memory, which is dedicated, and cannot be used.

Is there a difference between laptop memory sticks and desktop memory

As mentioned by SIW2, desktop PCs typically use full-size DIMMs (dual inline memory modules). laptops normally use SODIMMs (small outline DIMMs). They are entirely diffent physically, and not interchangeable, even though functionally they are the same. I have no idea what "Bree" was thinking.

Is your "workstation" the laptop listed in My Computer (Dell M6800)? If so, the largest SODIMMs it supports are 8GB. With 4 memory slots, the maximum RAM in the machine would be 32 GB. (That's with an I7-4940MX CPU. With a lesser CPU, only 2 of the SODIMM sockets would be usable, for a maximum of 16 GB.)

The suggestion to go to Crucial or Kingston online is good. They both guarantee that RAM they sell for a given PC will be compatible.
