It's not actually "wasting CPU cycles" because CPUs are also constantly evolving to meet the processing demands of new hardware.



I would not call SSDs architecture obsolete but rather "simplified" for better performance.

Yes, but I'll go even farther with your comment on SSDs. In a few more years, mechanical HDs will be obsolete, and only SSDs will be sold.

I can probably write about "Why Windows 10 is obsolete?" and talk about flatness of graphics ( which of course affects "speed" in a good way).

 

This was the best sentence in the article.

 

Crap I thought the SSD was a good thing, regardless, I still love the quickness over the spinning top.

HDDs --> Mass storage
External Drive --> Backup

He's not saying that solid state storage is obsolete, just the idea that you would access this storage as if it were a spinning hard disk, using the same SATA interfaces used for spinning hard drives. It's much more efficient to use an interface designed explicitly for solid state storage.

 

It would be nice if it were out there, albeit if it is then most of us have yet to hear of it. . .or is that just a silly thought.

all technology rolls on relentlessly forward. Maybe SSD's are an interim way forward from Spinners -- they will still be around for a while until and unless something CHEAPER, FASTER and uses less power comes around plus also the ability to fit into ever smaller spaces -- Fancy your Smart phone with say 20 TB of fast storage space !!!! who needs the cloud then.

No, People primarily use SSDs as a fast boot drive. On my computer it usually takes around 10 seconds to boot up which you couldn't achieve on hard drives.

Also now that 1tb SSDs are coming down in price, people are starting to use them as game drives to speed up game loading and level loading.
