    Why SSDs are obsolete

Just like with HDDs, once upon a time I thought my 20MB on the Atari was enormous and rocket fast. When SCSI came out my 486 went a-flying. My first IDE was 250MB, enormous !

So far this year I have replaced all HDDs in my main computer with SSDs. I now have two Kingston 480 gig SSDs , and truly enjoy the difference in speed. As WHS I bought my first SSD back in 2009, an Intel M 25 80 gig and it is still going strong as my main drive for my iMac 27 " OS X drive.

Lee, If I remember right, this Intel M25 has no Trim. Is that correct ?

    Yes

Perhaps, but there always seems to be a war, or natural disaster that wipes out a factory somewhere that causes prices to either increase or fail to drop as expected.

I think I have the same Intel. It was from Dane Elec and was the cheapest option at the time. I use it now in an enclosure for experiments - e.g. for installing Linux on an external device. Originally it was in a Vista machine which did not have Trim anyhow.

  9. I'll believe it when I see it.

I suspect that manufacturers will just drop drives with capacities <200 GB.

  10. If you go to the trouble to actually read the Dissertation, you will discover that nowhere does the PhD candidate actually say "obsolete"; that wording is the invention of the blogger -- a Consultant.

The PhD candidate goes on further to indicate that the prototype they built was sufficient "for the dissertation" (given that it was read-only).

In my view, something is "obsolete" under two circumstances. First, its function is no longer needed -- as in buggy whips when buggies are not commonplace anymore. Second, its function has been entirely replaced by an alternative -- such as DVRs replacing videotape recorders to save TV shows. Nothing in the dissertation indicates either of these to be the place. They build a limited-function prototype that implements only some of the functions of an SSD, and they admit that real-world situation is a lot more complex and has yet to be solved.

To me, this is yet another sorry instance of a blogger using hyperbole to get attention. After all, if his article had been entitled "Research indicates possible new directions in managing flash-based storage", it wouldn't have got much attention!

After all I'll definitely get a new 512GB SSD before Windows 10 RTM arrives.

512 is a waste. You only need 120GB. You don't really wanna mix your OS/programs and data. Put data on spinners. It's a lot easier and faster to fix a PC when data is separate. Image takes only 5 mins to complete, and a decision to clean install isn't hard to make. *Smile

    I have a 240gb that I switched with 120gb. I am using the 240gb as a test drive now.

I wish I had my data inside the box, at least; W10 sucks at loading data from ext drives!
