I used to use for storage but the lag waiting for them to spin up after being parked drove me nuts.

Air, if compressed in bottles yes, I'm somewhat of a pack-rat so it's more than true at the house, workshop or HDDs.

That is very true, i do have to wait 5 seconds for it to wake up, i could stop them from hibernating but not sure how good that would be on the HDD's

If they are nice and cool, being accessed often than they are better of left running.

  6. They are ECO drives (5400rpm) but not in use too often

Some of those have their own power saving features so you may not have a say anyway.

    Why SSDs are obsolete

    Hi there

Having storage modules bolted into the MOBO is IMO not a good idea -- means if the storage device FAILS you have to chuck the whole machine away (and there's enough junk littering the planet these days --we need to use resources much more environmentally).

Also you might want to try out different OS'es, move data between machines or even REMOVE the device altogether for security.

"Flashing" Rom's is not for the faint hearted either. Fixed storage might superficially have attractions but it's not very practicable and I'm sure will only be used in things that have a built in OS or "embedded OS" say like POS gear in Supermarkets etc). But again these types of applications don't need mega fast storage anyway -- It's no good if the Supermarket till gives you your total bill in 0.1 NANOSECS if it STILL takes you several minutes to bag up your purchases and load them into the trolley to take them away.

    Cheers

For your purpose John, speed is really of utmost importance. I would do the same. For most of us who are just regular users and testers, it's a different story. *Smile

  12. On that note you'll be able to relate to a larger ssd and it should read allot faster whether it's for just personal files or both os...,
Most of the issue is price so if anyone can get past that I don't see any advantage now days for using hdd's for anything 5200 or 7200 ssd's are better and create less heat,
Brands well that is a toss up *Smile
I like crucial but most people like Samsung's.

I was thinking this one: Crucial.com - Crucial MX200 SSD product information it's a bit more expensive than Kingston but cheaper than 850EVO.

  15. Very true,
Although testing everything on an ssd might cloud real life for others but is a good test none the less,
Real world not allot of machine come with ssd's so they would experience a different performance result,
For 10tp I started out on an ssd and never had any issues,

Once I switched to a hdd it got bricked,
So possibly a ssd would be best but hdd's are disposable they're so cheap *Wink
